Steamboat Posted January 20 Posted January 20 Just finished this Monogram '70 Roadrunner. Simple kit and very fun to build. I wanted to capture the 'day 2" 70's vibe with the huge rear tires and rake. The rear needed a fair amount of work to get the height. I recurved the springs, which were extremely weak, so I added a brass leaf to strengthen them up. At the same time I disconnected the molded in exhaust from the rear axle. Scratch built shackles add some additional lift. The Cragar wheels and Mickey Thompson tires are 3d printed from my own design. I made brake drums on all 4 wheels to give the wheels something to attach to. In the engine bay I removed the "Monogram second overflow tank" and replaced it with sheet styrene. A 3d printed distributor is about the only other change to the engine bay. Paint is Testors semi gloss black with automotive 2k clear. This was my first time using 2k and I'm still learning with it. It hardens fast and extremely hard, although I may have made a mistake by waiting 3 days before attempting to polish. It was nearly impossible to polish using rubbing compound. In the future I'll experiment with drying time and hardener ratio to see if I can make the clear a little softer. Comments and suggestions are always welcome! 16
happy grumpy Posted January 20 Posted January 20 Beautiful Mopar. I always liked these old monogram kits. 1
DanL Posted January 21 Posted January 21 Very clean build... I'm working on one of these right now. Haven't decided on a color yet but leaning to maybe one of those bright "Mod " colors they used back then. Cheers

Coyote_6 Posted January 21 Posted January 21 Very clean. Just right as far as tire sizes and stance. Great job! Steve
espo Posted January 21 Posted January 21 Beautiful looking paint finish and of course I like the black color. Great engine detailing. I do remember the "Stink Bug" look you refer to. We used to have extra wide rear tires on wheels with way too much off set and the inner edge of the fender opening would often tear at the raised white letter tires until they started to look like white walls. But it was cool right?

The rear wheels were 9" wide, and I had the L60 Good Year Polyglas Wide Oval tires on the rear. Genuine Suspension rear coil spring lifts with the upper rear control arm kit, and of course the longest Hi Jacker air shocks that would bolt on. The avatar is a model of that car, except for the scratched-up sidewalls on the rear tires. Ya, been there and done that, what were we thinking?
XYHARRY Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Very nice Mopar, you captured the 70s look perfectly. Well done Bill. Cheers, David. 😎👍
David G. Posted January 25 Posted January 25 The paint and detail look great! I love that 70's rake. David G.
Chinacar Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Every high school parking lot had one of these! I remember there was a senior with a Dodge Satellite in medium blue with Cragars and a rear lift...Nice nostalgic job!
satterwhite78 Posted January 26 Posted January 26 (edited) You might need to go back and put the script "roadrunner" in bigger letters.....the Ford and GM guys were a tad farsighted and never could read what was pulling off and away from them...lol BTW I DO LIKE FORD AND GM !..... Just like Mopar more! 😛 You need to post the audio: rumpa ta rumpta ta rumpa ta...." Edited January 26 by satterwhite78 . 1
