tim boyd Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Hi al... Just a quick single image of the beginning of a planned Model A project built in a post WW-II hot rod format. Future Plans include a body derived from the Round 2 "Mod Rod" kit, a banger four from the new ICM '30 Ford Phaeton kit, and the following wheels and tires. The wheels are from Norm Veber at Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland; they are rebops of a perfectly molded original issue part from the AMT Trophy Series '36 Ford kit. As we've discussed on the Forum here in the past, most of those wheels in the early AMT 1936 Ford kits were molded with flaws in the holes along the outside of the rim, and AMT soon changed the tool to mold these holes filled. I found a rare perfect wheel from the parts box collection of the late Chuck Helppie (1977 MPC National Champion and co-founder of the NNL movement) and I sent it to Norm for his lineup, and they are now available for order from him. Here's what they look like properly painted and detailed... Thanks for looking...TIM 14 1
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Whoa...THANK YOU !!! I have several old '36 kits from AMT, and have never seen one single perfect wheel. Guess I better get an order in to Norm pronto. Ex-moderator and resin-caster extraordinaire Casey (Forward Resin on feePay) used to do a set that he'd mastered from (I think) the Revell '37 Ford pickup rims (that lacked the wide-5 center details) with the wide-5 centers from the AMT wheels added. I have several sets and they are exquisite...but fragile, and I believe too many ham-handers ruining them influenced Casey to stop offering them...at least that's how my increasingly foggy old brain remembers it.
LennyB Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Those wheels look great and are a fantastic starting point for sure. I can come up with a lot of ideas for them. Looking forward to see what you do with them Tim. Thanks for posting.
tim boyd Posted January 30 Author Posted January 30 (edited) Just spoke to Norm a couple of days ago. To date he has not received any orders for these wheels. If you are seriously considering a project that might include them or want to have a set in your kit parts inventory "just in case", I recommend you send him an order. Just my 2 cents...TB Edited January 30 by tim boyd 1

Mr. Metallic Posted January 31 Posted January 31 Hi Tim. I tried sending you a PM but it says you can't receive them. Is your inbox full, or do they have it disabled because you're a celebrity? 😁 If possible could you send me a PM please?

Ace-Garageguy Posted February 1 Posted February 1 (edited) Josh Mills, who built "Blackjack" for James Hetfield (a contender for the 2017 AMBR) favored the wide-5 Ford wheels on earlier cars. Josh, who I was fortunate to have worked with for several years on other projects, has an unerring eye for what looks "right". (TIM: I don't mean to clutter up YOUR thread. TarheelRick Posted February 5 Posted February 5 (edited) The original issue Monogram 36 Ford Coupe/Convertible had a really nice set of wide-fives, although not really sure what they look like under the hubcaps. Edited February 5 by TarheelRick
tim boyd Posted February 8 Author Posted February 8 Thanks all for your feedback and comments so far. I tend to get caught up in stuff that is probably on the ragged edge of modeling; these wide five wheels are an example of that. It is encouraging to see your interest, and your posting of similar wheels from other sources. Best....TIM

They are the same wheels as the most current offerings of Monogram 37 Ford PU's. No wide five detail under the caps.
bill-e-boy Posted February 19 Posted February 19 Saw this today on or monthly Gold Cruisers run. Gold Card - retiree - we get one when we turn 65 in NZ. An excellent starting point for some wide five wheels and lots of patina. The Willy's has wide fives front and back. A 327 up front with an open banjo rear. Not sure of gear box but more than likely a Muncie. The car has a history dating back to 1958 as a circuit racer by a guy by the name of Rod Coppins who was big down this way. Also in the collection is a Camaro that Rod raced. Looks like the car may have had some strip action too with remains od A/GAS lettering on the roof A cool old racer using what was to hand back in the day and may have started out race career with a flat motor using some left-over bits from other race cars. As could be expected for the day the car would have evolved over time 1
tim boyd Posted February 27 Author Posted February 27 Model is done, photos complete, captions and text written; some final editing to come. Not sure if or when or where it might run. But I think I can say that the predecessor project that mostly inspired this one is cued up for issue #226, if all goes well. Hoping we all see that issue soon. Best...TB. 2
tim boyd Posted March 1 Author Posted March 1 Here is the "predecessor" project I referenced above (see the bottom of #226 cover below...). Thanks to you all for your interest...TIM 1
