New Login Procedure Coming

Thanks Dave…. Done mine. It’s worth persevering… it took me three requests (or possibly just 45 minutes from my first one) for the email with the link to come through. (And yes, I did check my junk mail religiously).

Ran a few tests logging in with my e mail address and it's as smooth as can be. I'm happy that our usernames can still be displayed.

Thanks, everyone. This is primarily to keep your account from getting hacked. But, the vendor is dropping support for using screen names in the next big release so we also want to get ahead of that.

Well that to me is a bummer and to me a stupid move.  I have been "peteski" to family/friends/co-workers for close to 40 years.  Software developers and designers seem  to be on some weird kick to make our lives less fun, usually in a name something like security, or just because they think it is better their way.  Same thing seems to be happening here.

Not too long ago user's profiles showed each members location (well, whatever they chose to use for it).  With this forum hosting members from all over the world it was good to see that info.   For example I wouldn't suggest that a member in Germany or Australia go looking for some chemical available in an American-based store or, use some local product which is not available abroad.

But that information was hidden, for our own safety.  Pretty soon we will all have randomly assigned user names to protect our personal info. That's a 2-way street. Anonymity to me breeds misinformation.  More and more fun is getting sucked out of our online presence.

The only change is to your login credentials. Your forum name will continue to be used as it has been. Bad actors have used the screen name, and a weak password to hack accounts, leaving us to clean up the resulting mess. It isn't desirable, but this is the world we live in, and realism is far more functional than denial. 

We have had incidents where forum members were being pursued and harassed via their locations here. Their situation was serious enough to warrant removing them for the entire board. If you want to advertise your location, you're free to do so in your signature block.

Well Dave, I am confused.  I thought the screen name (forum name?) and current login name was the same.  Then you stated "the vendor is dropping support for using screen names in the next big release so we also want to get ahead of that." I took that as if we will no longer be able to use screen names on the forum. What exactly would be used? Dunno.  Maybe email address like for the logins going forward?  That was my complaint - I like using my screen name.

However your latest reply seems to indicate "The only change is to your login credentials. Your forum name will continue to be used as it has been", so that's why I'm confused.

As for stating my approximate location on this planet, there was a thread in the off-topic section some time ago how it was too bad that the member's location was no longer seen.  I did suggest that members could put their location info in their signature which is exactly what I do.

Peter, you log in with your e-mail and password, but we still see you as peteski, just like you like it. I don't know what the fuss is all about...

Switched to email for login. Worked seamlessly.

For those of you that have forgotten your current password, please use the Forgot Password option at the login page. This will allow you to reset your password. There is no need to start a new account.

Well, I did have to change things up, but unfortunately, all my original info (join date, number of followers), is set back to zero. My login info did have my user name tied in somewhat, so I thought it best to change things around.

I just logged out and cleared both the user name and password fields. I then used used my email for my user name, and re-entered my current password. It worked perfectly. Thanks Dave, the Moderators, and the MCM Team.

Perhaps the hacking issue is from being able to use facebook to log in - you know what they say the more cooks in the kitchen .....

Yeah, as I mentioned few posts earlier, that is confusing me too.

They are only dropping Screen Names as a login option. Your Screen Name will still show as it normally does. This change is only to the login procedure.

Dave, I was able to get back to my own username, but I did change the password for safekeeping. All's well now. 😎

Hi Dave. 

I'd like to change the email address attached to this account but I believe that address may be associated with an old account. Am I able to change the email address and keep this account. 

Also, is it possible to change the user name without starting a new account?
