junkyardjeff Posted February 16 Posted February 16 I would like to make this one stock and is there a kit out there that could donate the parts to put this one back to stock. I found a hood and the stock seats were in the box but no stock grille or bumpers.

junkyardjeff Posted February 16 Author Posted February 16 Are the newer versions based of the original,I did find some parts but would I have to do some modifications to make the parts work.
blizzy63 Posted February 16 Posted February 16 (edited) Your original AMT “for ‘68” kit was a carryover from the 1967 Camaro kit but as a custom only offering. AMT lost the Chevrolet Motor Division contract to make the 1968 promotional models to MPC. AMT continued to make “for ‘68” subjects without stock versions. The later AMT ‘68 Z-28 kit may be the best source stock ‘68 parts like engine, interior, grille, hood, taillights, wheels. I’ve never directly seen a “for ‘68” Camaro kit so I’ve never made a side-by-side comparison with a later AMT ‘67/68 Camaro kit. Edited February 16 by blizzy63
junkyardjeff Posted February 16 Author Posted February 16 I found some 68 parts and will get them, will take a close look at mine when I get back home to see if they might work. It shows a stock version on the box.
Mark Posted February 16 Posted February 16 (edited) The "for '68" box might show a stock-looking version, but it's closer to a '67 than a '68. That kit did have stock bumpers, as well as stock ('67) rally wheels and taillights. The grille was the '67 piece with a bar added going across. The interior pattern is not stock either. In fact, that Camaro kit was issued later as a custom Firebird with a lot of parts changed, but the interior was the same as the Camaro's custom unit. Edited February 16 by Mark Spelling
junkyardjeff Posted February 16 Author Posted February 16 After adding up all the parts I need on eBay it's going to be cheaper to buy a complete kit to get all the parts I need,I did notice about the interior is that the 68 have headrests where the 67 has none so I am going to get a 67 kit.
Chris V Posted February 17 Posted February 17 If you want to build a '68 you're better off getting a different kit. This is a super rare custom only kit, so modifying it will hurt both it's value and historical significance. Many collectors would love to have it "as is" or simply restore it using the box stock parts. I have two of rebuilders of the AMT "1968" Impala, and I can't wait to restore them to their full custom glory.

I will consider that and to be honest I really do not care much for Camaros so I can just get another kit and built it. This one fell in my lap and would prefer a stock looing one over the custom version.
junkyardjeff Posted February 27 Author Posted February 27 Picked up stock bumpers and grille and will keep the custom parts if someone in the future would like to put it back to custom.
