junkyardjeff Posted February 28 Posted February 28 I have a 60s AMT 36 Ford kit on the way and going to build it as a early 50s hotrod so it must have a hopped up flathead,I am looking for a 40 to 48 version but all I have came across were stock so is there a kit that has that era with speed equipment.
rattle can man Posted February 28 Posted February 28 AMT '50 Ford convertible has twin carbs and I believe Offenhauser heads.
Mr. Metallic Posted February 28 Posted February 28 (edited) AMT 49 Merc has Offy heads and a 2 carb intake in the black box art version from the mid-90's and later Revell 40 Ford convertible and coupe hot rod kits have a 2 carb intake and heads Revell 48 Ford chopped coupe has Navarro heads and intake @tim boyd is the kit flathead expert Edited March 3 by Mr. Metallic
johnyrotten Posted February 28 Posted February 28 Both Iceman collections and Texas 3d have flatheads if you want to go that route. 1
Ace-Garageguy Posted February 28 Posted February 28 (edited) Whole lotta stuff out there if you know what you want, even Ardun heads in the Revell '50 Ford pickup (but be aware the earliest versions have incorrect exhaust manifolds)... ...and if you want really wild, Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland has the most exquisite little S.C.o.T. blower for a flathead you'll ever see. EDIT: Some of the 3D / resin Ardun engines have only 3 exhaust ports and primary header pipes, which is the same mistake the early Revell Ardun engine had. A correct Ardun has FOUR exhaust ports on each head, naturally having FOUR exhaust primaries as well. EDIT 2: A S.C.o.T. blower is pretty much the ultimate engine jewelry for any hot flathead, whether flat-headed or Ardun-headed. Edited February 28 by Ace-Garageguy 2
Ace-Garageguy Posted February 28 Posted February 28 (edited) Here's more mix-and match info on hot flatheads, just to confuse you thoroughly... Edited February 28 by Ace-Garageguy 1

Not sure when they added them, just know that the one I built around 1990 didnt have them yet.
Bullybeef Posted March 1 Posted March 1 (edited) Lots of useful bits here. The revell 48 ford custom has a nice two carb Intake and some nice covers, The revell 32 sedan also has a nice three carb manifold and some nice chrome covers as well. as Bill @Ace-Garageguy mentioned Norm at Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland have some darn nice parts and I just received an order, he has a specific set for the amt/lindberg flattie as well. I’m sure you will have no problem sourcing parts now that you have all this information to delve through, heck I’m gonna re read a lot of this in case I missed some thing haha. tim boyd Posted March 2 Posted March 2 (edited) If anyone has a stash of old Scale Autos, I did two articles showing most of the 1/24-25th scale Flathead Ford hot rod engines. I think the original one was around 2005 or so and called "Flathead Fever" and the second one followed around a year later and may have been called "More Flathead Fever" or something similar. My favorite of all is the one in the Revell 1948 Ford Custom Chopped Coupe kit. One more I don't think was mentioned above (I did not re-read the thread) was the Race Flathead V8-60 in Revell's superb Edelbrock Quarter Midget kit released in 2010. As for Aftermarket, I've used Norm's Replicas and Miniatures Flathead parts for decades now, and more recently, the "Flathead Speed Shop" from VCG Resins by Reese has some way cool parts tool. Have fun everyone! TB Edited March 2 by tim boyd 1 2
rattle can man Posted March 3 Posted March 3 The V-8 60 should be smaller than the regular flathead. The V-8 60 (60 HP) was a 136c.i., scale down flathead originally meant for economy, not performance. 2
stavanzer Posted March 3 Posted March 3 The Revell '37 Ford Pickup in the 2'n'1 Version has a nice Hopped up Flathead also. 3

Its smaller size was just the ticket for Midget racing, though the Offys won most of the races it seems. Revell's Midget V8-60 engine is just about begging to go into a Belly Tanker project if you ask me...TB 2

The first edition to have the Offy heads was the black stock build as the boxart from the mid-90's and later versions.
bobss396 Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Norm Veber was and probably is 1 stop shopping for flathead being. His crab style distributor is hard to beat. Lots of heads, carbs, headers, etc. 1

According to my personal "The best of Tim Boyd library" SAE did the Flathead Fever articles in the April and December 2005 issue! There was also an update with some Flatheads to this (2014 builders guide to Hot Rod V8s) in the August 2014 issue. And by the way, thank you Tim Boyd for your wonderful articles about the pleasure of scale model Hot Rodding! I collected reports and clippings from different magazines (SAE, Model Cars, Street Rodder,...) since the 80ies about this subject, and when I read up, about 90% of them are written by Tim Boyd (and sometimes BT Sherwood) 😉 Edited March 5 by hustinettenbaer 1

junkyardjeff Posted March 6 Author Posted March 6 Thanks for all the info, the deal on the 60s 36 did not happen but got some 70s version for parts and might have enough to build one but its been pushed back for now but will keep watch for a hopped up flathead for when it happens.
Sledsel Posted March 7 Posted March 7 If you are wanting the early flathead with the coolant hoses in the center of the cylinder head, the Revell 40 Ford Street rod has a good one and is 1/25 scale.

I built my chopped AMT '36 Ford 3-window coupe using the stock '36 engine block with the addition of heads and intake from the Revell '32 Ford Sedan kit (85-2062). The Revell '37 Ford pickup kit (85-4516) also has a very nice hot rod '40-48 flathead ripe for the pickins.
carsntrucks4you Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Replicas Miniatures of Maryland has a bunch of Flathead parts. Don't forget Model Car Garage they also have some nice stuff

The valve cover are also very good. I had used them one all of my flathead models
junkyardjeff Posted Saturday at 11:00 PM Author Posted Saturday at 11:00 PM The project will be back on,I have a 70s version on the way.
