dragstk Posted March 11 Posted March 11 This is the well known and commonly used Tamiya Plastic Scriber ll. And mine needs a new set of blades. Does anyone know where I can get some new blades? There is none listed on the Tamiya site, or on any online hobby shop Ive been to. The scriber is marked as a Olfa product and they list the scriber but no replacement blades. Any help here would be most appreciated Jeff
dragstk Posted March 12 Author Posted March 12 Thanks Greg, but as far as I understand it, the 74160 is for a #11 blade holder. They are actually smaller, thinner than the ones that come in the scriber I have. The blades for the Scriber ll part # 74015. And I now see they are discontinued Now maybe 74160 blades will fit and work. I dont know, but that is what I was able to gather from my internet search. Any one have any experience with these?
Belugawrx Posted March 12 Posted March 12 They do have different collets for thicker or thinner blades...?
Mark Posted March 12 Posted March 12 Not X-Acto knives; each has only one collet. The two pictured are different sizes. There are instances where more than one X-Acto handle uses the same blades. The wide chisel blade in the knife at right is tapered down at the collet end. One of the X-Acto handles might accept the Tamiya scriber blade, but you'd have to test fit. But it would have to be a tight fit, if it were sloppy it could move or slip while you are working with it. The off-brand knife handles are often just slightly different from X-Acto making the blades a poor fit. Some are too wide, others too narrow. If the Tamiya scriber blade is a sloppy fit in the closest X-Acto handle, one of the off-brand ones might work, but figuring out which one would be a problem. A lot of the off-brand ones have plastic parts in the collet which makes them a non-starter for me. 1
NOBLNG Posted March 12 Posted March 12 (edited) The OP is looking for new blades, not handles, I assume the blade he has is worn out. I suggest he contact Tamia to see if the 74160 blades will fit his existing handle. If not then…yeah he needs a new handle or a different brand of scriber. Edited March 12 by NOBLNG
dragstk Posted March 13 Author Posted March 13 yes,Im just looking for the blades. According to the Tamiya web site, replacement blades are discontinued. So, Ive ordered the 74160 blades, made for a #11 holder. If they wont work in my scriber handle, then Ill just use the blades in a #11 holder. It seems funny that Tamiya is still selling the Scriber ll. Or maybe its just until stock runs out. Either way, Ill report back when I get blades and let you know how it goes. Thank you to all that took the time to reply
SSNJim Posted March 13 Posted March 13 I would check Amazon, Ebay and the like for the proper blades. I've had pretty good luck with finding discontinued products brand new on those sites. Sometimes hobby shops overbuy or incorrectly estimate the demands, and they have the stuff sitting on the shelves.
Rick L Posted March 14 Posted March 14 (edited) Try McMaster Carr industrial supply. They have an array of different blades with dimensions that may work for you. Also check under their scalpel section. Edited March 14 by Rick L Added note
Ace-Garageguy Posted March 14 Posted March 14 After looking at the configuration of the blade in the original post, I don't see any reason why it couldn't be sharpened using a whetstone, like blades have been sharpened since there have been blades. Though I realize we live in a disposable-everything society now, old-school solutions can have some very real value when replacement parts are no longer available. 2 1
peteski Posted March 14 Posted March 14 I have a larger version of that tool made by Olfa for scoring acrylic. The blade itself has asimilar shape but it is larger and double ended. I'm also surprised how a blade made of hard steel got dull while being used on soft plastic. I thought it would remain sharp for a very long time and possibly only need replacement if the blade broke
dragstk Posted March 17 Author Posted March 17 I got the 74160 blades today. Not even close. I have 4 different #11 blade holders and 3 out of 4, these blade would not fit. But they did in 1 of them, so thats how Ill use them Original scriber blades on top, new ones on the bottom
Bugatti Fan Posted March 17 Posted March 17 (edited) Olfa products are designed primarily for artwork cutting rather than model making. Tamiya might well have the tool and blades marketed under licence using their own brand name as a model making tool. If your blade handle or blade is marked Olfa I suggest that you look towards art suppliers where you might have better luck finding an identical replacement. Alternatively, why not contact Olfa directly to find out if that blade is actually discontinued. It may not be, and could be that just Tamiya have stopped marketing it under licence. if all this fails there are plenty of alternative blades and handles on the market. It's not as though they are expensive being such a basic tool. Edited March 17 by Bugatti Fan
