OldNYJim Posted Thursday at 03:30 AM Posted Thursday at 03:30 AM So, I’ve had this kit on my to-buy list for a couple of years - it’s a special release of the Revell VW Bus, but packaged for Christmas time. Every day in December you follow a step, and end up worth a build by Christmas Day. Now, I know this kit is pretty easily available in non-seasonal form, but I really wanted to pick one up and complete it one year. Problem was, the shipping was always crazy expensive on them, and I never found one until recently at a decent price. ONE of them popped up on Amazon last week at $30, with Prime delivery, so I jumped at the chance. When it arrived, I found out why most places were charging $80 just to deliver the thing…fully grown cat for scale here: It’s HUGE! I was certain that they’d either accidentally sent a whole case of them, or they sent the wrong item, but nope…just a RIDICULOUSLY oversized box. Is a 17” x 11” x 11” box the largest that a 1/25 kit has ever been packaged in? This has to be in the running for the largest ever… 4 1
89AKurt Posted Thursday at 03:41 AM Posted Thursday at 03:41 AM Using the cat really helped. 😹 Any fancy packaging to use for scratch-building a campsite? 1
SpeedAndViolence Posted Thursday at 04:31 AM Posted Thursday at 04:31 AM That's a 1/25 scale kit?!? A 1/8 Pocher Ferrari F40 could fit in that... 1
Bainford Posted Thursday at 04:49 AM Posted Thursday at 04:49 AM (edited) A triumph for packaging. Also probably the only 1/25 scale kit with a handle. The cat looks pretty sure there is enough room for him in there, too. Edited Thursday at 04:53 AM by Bainford 1 4

NOBLNG Posted Thursday at 09:54 AM Posted Thursday at 09:54 AM Nice alternative to having the box so small that everything has to be arranged in perfect order to get it all back in without crushing something. 1
Daddyfink Posted Thursday at 12:50 PM Posted Thursday at 12:50 PM (edited) So what does it look like inside? Edited Thursday at 12:54 PM by Daddyfink 3
iamsuperdan Posted Thursday at 03:35 PM Posted Thursday at 03:35 PM I think that's excellent. now I want one. I think the biggest box I've dealt with is the Revell London Bus. And I guess the Revell Cityliner bus, as it's the same size packaging. I have three of the London Bus kits and one Cityliner. They take up a lot of shelf space! 1
stitchdup Posted Thursday at 03:56 PM Posted Thursday at 03:56 PM my largest box is the twin heller fergie set with the book. its the same size as 3 large tamiya gt boxes laid end to end. the next largest is an airfix spit in 1/24
Dave Ambrose Posted Thursday at 05:14 PM Posted Thursday at 05:14 PM I was given this Wright Flyer 1 kit. This is the longest box in my stash and the next one up in my queue. Biggest box is a 1/72 scale XB-70 Valkyrie. 2
Mark Posted Thursday at 06:18 PM Posted Thursday at 06:18 PM It'd be ironic if something STILL got crushed in there. Maybe Revell hired a package designer who previously worked for a high-end candy maker, or a cosmetics company... 3
kurth Posted Thursday at 06:33 PM Posted Thursday at 06:33 PM (edited) I think the largest box I have dealt with in terms of length and width combined is the Otaki 1978 Corvette. It is pretty hard to get it out of it's place so I do not have a picture or measurements. The longest, most awkward box I have is the Revell 1/400 Queen Mary 2, which is similarly buried deep in a closet, but I found an old picture of the kit, it is 4 model car boxes long: But in terms of Box:Content ratio, that VW Van is probably the biggest box. The largest mass market kit box I have seen was a Hasegawa sailboat ... The box was sitting on the ground in the vendor section of a model show and I want to say the box was at least 3 or 4 feet tall. Edited Thursday at 06:41 PM by kurth 2
Can-Con Posted Thursday at 06:55 PM Posted Thursday at 06:55 PM Well, it is an advent calendar so it makes sense it would be big. Are you gonna save it for next Christmas season, Jim? That would be fun. Largest one I ever had was one of these when I was a kid. Unfortunately the instructions were missing so?? Hey, I was a kid so I still had fun with it. 3

They take up a lot of shelf space! And then you'll find out how much the built models take up on your display shelves! I had plenty of models in large boxes. Of course the 1:8 scale Pocher models. Then there are 1:8 Monogram Trans AM, OTAKI 1:12 Lamborghini and Corvette, Tamiya 1:6 bikes, Revell sailing ship models like 1:96 USS Constitution, Can-Do Wrecker, AMT Christie Fire Engine, Airfix 1:72 Boeing 707, and several other ones in my collection which escape me at this point. While all the above-mentioned boxes have larger footprint than the Revell Advent box we are discussing here, this box appears to easily beat them all in its height.
Daddyfink Posted Thursday at 10:08 PM Posted Thursday at 10:08 PM If I remember right, this box was no slouch! 5

deuces wild Posted Friday at 07:55 PM Posted Friday at 07:55 PM (edited) Was there ever a 5 foot tall??? model of the Saturn V rocket that was produced some years back, or was I dreaming????.....🤔😵💫 Edited Friday at 07:56 PM by deuces wild

The kit is 154cm (5ft and change) as built, but several of the stages are a bit short, so an accurate one is even taller. The stages are multi-part, though, so the box isn’t that big. The Revell 1/96 kit (which uses styrene sheets rolled into a cylinder for the stage walls) is only 3/4 the length, but in at least a couple of versions came in a box that is big enough to function as a “travel case” for the completed model… best, M. Little Timmy Posted Saturday at 12:26 AM Posted Saturday at 12:26 AM At the moment I have Three Revell 1/72 scale submarines. The box's are about 3 1/2 feet long. But I believe the biggest kit box I had was Monograms Golden T. 1
Dave Van Posted Saturday at 02:57 AM Posted Saturday at 02:57 AM Revell 1/96 scale Saturn V kit box is over 4 feet tall. Not because it needs to be but it becomes a storage case after building 1
SfanGoch Posted Saturday at 04:38 PM Posted Saturday at 04:38 PM Ding-ding-ding! We have a winner! Soar Art's 1/35 scale 80cm Dora Railway Gun is packed in a 41" x 21" x 13" box which is almost as large as a studio apartment in NYC. I bought one some years ago but haven't started it yet. I wonder why? 2 2 2 1
Brian Austin Posted Sunday at 06:58 AM Posted Sunday at 06:58 AM I have to wonder how big the box for Renwal's Visible car chassis was. 1
