Roy's Hot Rods Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Guys, Just wondering if I should chop the top on my current project, a section'ed '39 Chevy. Whatya think? Here's the project's photo album; http://public.fotki.com/RoySorenson/model-cars/tribute-car/
george 53 Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Roy, I'm personally a chopped kinda guy,and it sure couldn't hurt , BUT, with the section job, it looks ALOT different, and you could probly forgo the chopped roof. It looks ok to me as it is.
Harry P. Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Chop it! With the section, the top looks too tall. Cut that sucker down!
george 53 Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Oh, and are you the Roy Sorenson that Gregg bought the Plastic Fanatic from? And turned it into the BEST Model Car Magazine on the PLANET!!!??????
Roy's Hot Rods Posted June 14, 2009 Author Posted June 14, 2009 Oh, and are you the Roy Sorenson that Gregg bought the Plastic Fanatic from? And turned it into the BEST Model Car Magazine on the PLANET!!!?????? That's funny, I thought it was already the "BEST model car magazine on the planet", BEFORE Gregg bought it! LOL! Yep it's me. I'm getting back into the hobby after about a five year hiatus.
Bernard Kron Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 (edited) I'd say don't chop it. It sits nicely as is. The open look of the greenhouse complements the big wheels and the long nose. Chopping it will probably make it look squashed. But I guess I'm the only one.... Edited June 14, 2009 by gbk1
Raul_Perez Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Hey, Roy!! I might chop it a little, but not too much... Later,
Joe Handley Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Chop it! With the section, the top looks too tall. Cut that sucker down! X2, maybe a scale inch or two, nothing drastic
randx0 Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I would chop it a little more in the front and less in the back . Also glad to see ya back and I look forward to seeing this and other projects finished!

slant6 Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I have yet to chop one myself, but I think it would look great chopped.
hellonwheelz3 Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I have yet to chop one myself, but I think it would look great chopped. It's a great ride either way, but i would say if you're going to chop it, do it minimally. keep us posted!
Steven Zimmerman Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Chop it. Lay the front glass back at more of an angle.Lay the back glass forward, put mor slant in the B pillars,or lose them altogether.......Steve Zimmerman aka the'Z'man..........LOVED the old Plastic Fanatic,BTW.....
Steven Zimmerman Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 (muttermutter....) ...MORE slant; I gotta learn to proof read........Steve Zimmerman aka the'Z'man.....

Chopping it will probably make it look squashed. But I guess I'm the only one.... I'm with gbk1. I think it will look squashed. The whole greenhouse seems too short to look good chopped with the large section removed. It looks like 4 to 6 scale inches. If you absolutely must chop it, I would do so minimally - maybe an inch. Personally, I'd lean more towards a roadster/convertible job, and remove the top, but that wasn't presented as an option. Edit: I just went out to your link (after the fact), and saw why a roadster wasn't an option. I'll stick with no or absolute minimum chop. Edited June 14, 2009 by SSNJim
Foxer Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 (edited) I go with the minimal, or even no chop crowd. Depends what kind of look you like. I rather like sectioned, full greenhouse cars. And, nice to see ya around again Roy. And, looked at your web page and gallery's after posting this. Your 3D car meshes look great , especially the engines. There's just not enough 3D engines around! I've been fascinated with car meshes since the day 3D Studio came out in '92 and have been collecting them since. I always had too many other things going to create any car meshes from scratch, but have modified and refined many. There's just something magical watching a car render come up all textured and smoothed!! 3D has always been just a hobby for me although I've done proposed building renderings for my consulting business and many objects for Poser artists. White325is Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Id have to say dont do a full chop all the way around. Just cut a little section out of the front window post and give it a little rake to go with the long body.

MikeMc Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Mail slot windows...slammed on the ground......if you want a hot rod
Fletch Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 (edited) Roy, normally I'd say chop it as stock height builds from my bench are pretty rare. But, after looking at your WIP photos I'd be tempted to leave it the way it is. From the view in this photo it doesn't need anything else but paint! Hosted on Fotki BTW, good to have you back hacking and whacking plastic. Edited June 14, 2009 by Fletch
Jon Cole Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Not a radical chop.... Some say "leave it as is" Others say "A slight chop" I'm leaning with the second op. I call it a "Two cut-off wheels in the moto tool" chop. No matter, she's gonna look sa-weet!
Hizoot Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Welcome back Roy, Good to hear from you again, as for the hot rod I like the roadster which normanlly is not my thing. But if you want the top then a slight chop will work fine. You've already started the custom treatment so finish what you start..! As for roadsters, check out my Willys serveral posts below if you have time. It has tons of body mods & you may find an idea or 2 in there... Hizoot

Ya, 3D models are great, and take up very little room. Do you have any of your 3D stuff on the web for us to see?
nascarfan Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 I'd say yes, with the channeling you have done I would slice a little out of the roof.
