torinobradley Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 (edited) Hello my model brotheren! I appologize to any of you that have seen this on other boards but wanted to bring it here too as I am having so much fun building this one! I am participating in a Community Build Project to bring a Hot Wheels car to 24th or 25th scale. To further challenge this build, it has to be old school. It is on the TRaK (Traditional Rod and Kustom) board so all items used have to be dated prior to 1970 and be in line with that style of hot rod or custom. Started with the ZZTop '34 Ford I got in a lot less engine, wheels & tires (didn't need those anyway). To recreate the Sooo Fast, I needed a mid engine, rear transaxle. I used the Parts Pack DeSoto Firedome and mated it with a GT40 Mk IV transaxle, staying under the pre-1970 timeline for parts. The track nose is from the A pickup and was modified to match the hot wheel. You can see through the stages where I am going with it. I just got the wheels & tires thanks to my friend Sakari in Finland. I don't know if I want to keep 'em chrome or make em look like brushed aluminum. Any opinions??? Thanks for looking and comments always welcome! Edited August 11, 2009 by torinobradley
Bernard Kron Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Glad to see this over here. I'm sure everyone will appreciate it. The wheels and tires look very nice. As to whether you should leave them as is, it all depends on the paint job and overall look that you're after. The more realistic looking the more likley you'll want to make them look like brushed aluminum.
GTmike400 Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 I eagerly await more progress. The Hot Wheels almost makes 1/24 look like 1/8!
Foxer Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 This is cool and looking good. Hot Wheels would never make a non-chromed painted wheel!
torinobradley Posted July 30, 2009 Author Posted July 30, 2009 Just a little update. Getting the frame worked out, got the roll cage started, the back firewall, the scoop done and did some more refining on the body and belly pan. Comments always welcome! This was the frame before I cut out the remaining center supports. Top cut out. Found my scoop! In the car. Thanks for looking!
Scott Colmer Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 (edited) This is a great build! I occasionally buy a Hot Wheel if it looks neat -I have this one, so watching this build has been fun. I'll keep following all the posts wherever I see them. Great fabrication all around. Ingenious fabrication on the scoop too. The upward tilt is a little different, but I see it is a good match to the Hot Wheel. I think brushed aluminum would be a good look for the caps. Scott Edited July 30, 2009 by Scott Colmer
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 WOW! That looks great, Andrew. Have you thought 'bout having a few bodies casted? I'd buy one, or two.
pharr7226 Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 A scoop out of a lighter? Amazing. Great work man.
torinobradley Posted August 11, 2009 Author Posted August 11, 2009 Another update on my plaything: Louvers going on! The louvers were molded in a single piece which I sanded and trimmed individually and placed them one by one on the belly pan. Have the pan done but still need to do the rear panel. Then, played around with making my own joints out of 1/8" plastic rod, a drill and some files... Now just gotta learn to make 'em exactly alike one-another...
