FujimiLover Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 Anybody watch the show Pimp My Ride? When is a car worth keeping when they pimp it up to the point where the wheels and/or stereo equipment is worth ten times fold what the car is worth? Why not just get him a new car to start with? A few episodes where the car is really a "POS", Xzibit actually has gone past the call of duty and bought brand new cars for the deserving people. But really, when is it worth buying 5,000 dollar set of wheels on a 500 dollar clunker? LOL! Sorry, but that just makes me laugh! Anybody else have any thoughts?
vizio93 Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 ohh man i know wat you mean. the only reason i watch it is for xzibit, like when he picks up the car. Also you never (well rarely) see them put a new engine in any of them. So you get a "sweet" lookin' ride, but it won't make it to the next block down the street . just give it to Chip
James Flowers Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 A lot of the cars I have seen on the show are pure junk. How would you pass any inspection in them? Every cop in town would pull them over. They do some great looking paint jobs and interior work on the cars. The body work is not made too last long. I do believe they do fix the engines and trans on them if they need it. I noticed also, if they really like the type of car it is, they will go all out to do it right. The first thing I would do if they did my car would sell all the stereo junk and monitors they put in them. Then go buy me a car with the money.
pstreet Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 The first thing I would do if they did my car would sell all the stereo junk and monitors they put in them. Then go buy me a car with the money. I can 99.9% guarantee that you have to sign some sort of paperwork when you retake possession of your car that says you wont sell it or any part of it for x amount of time, if at all. Almost guessing it might become MTV property somehow, with you as the care giver. The things they do to those cars are just hideous.
RodneyBad Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 Yaa, I've seen the show once or twice (maybe even Thrice) They fixed up a car all nice and shinie and pimped out waaaaaaaay toooooooooo much. The guy sure was happy as can be. Jumped in his New Pimped out ride and ripped down the street. I should say Tried to ripped down the street. It more like Putted.. Still ran like Crud And there is Chip Foose. A Real Car guy. Your car comes back looking, Running, stopping, and with increased value. The difference with Real Cars and Real people and Well, people with transportation .
FujimiLover Posted August 15, 2009 Author Posted August 15, 2009 (edited) I think Trick my Truck is much better show than Pimp My Ride. Two thing's I like most about PMR is the host Xzibit when he was hosting the show, loved it when he cracked jokes about the car, also his knowledge of cars is pretty good too. Unless of coarse he's just going by what writers tell him. Second thing I enjoy is watching the expressions on the people first when Xzibit shows up at their doors, and then when they see their car remade. I don't think I've seen any other season's without Xzibit. I think the better show is Unique Whips as that is real world customers with real world exotic cars and SEMA events et'c. That's the kind of job I wouldn't mind having had I had the skills growing up. I just over all think it's ridiculous to put five grand's worth of rims on a 2 dollar clunker. As for the engines, I have seen theme occasionally repair if needed, dress up certainly. I've never seen theme actually replace an engine/tranny. Plus, I never see theme lower the car! They do all this neat stuff to it, and it look's horrible because it's a stock ride-hight! Fender gap is ugly! The coolest car they have ever done was the Silver Surfer episode where they took an 89 Honda CRX, gave it the multi-piece Black Widow kit, and chromed it. That was awesome! I've often wondered how my 2001 Honda Insight would look chromed! However, they didn't lower it, and that's one thing they seem to forget doing. I think Xzibit's personality is what made the show. That and WCC's crew. I also wonder how many of these people have insurance when their car is so much a POS, and I wonder how many get stolen after the show! Edited August 15, 2009 by FujimiLover
vizio93 Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 (edited) trick my truck is also a good show, but it think it is a little "by the script". they say stuff that you can obviously tell that they have been told to say. also it never shows them sanding the truck down and removing the original paint. they just wheel it into the paint booth already primered. i know that it would take a looooooong time to do that, i guess they think that stuff is boring to the viewers, but i kinda like that stuff. other than that, it is still a pretty neat show. Clay Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 You know, those cars may have been a POS to you, but to them it was their way around. Yeah they went a little extremem on alot of them, but that adds to the entertainment of the show. Plus I highly doubt that they would let a car go without something done to the engine, whether it be a rebuild or a new engine. I do enjoy all the automotive shows, but I really like the Overhaulin episode where West Coast Customs did the car. I guess I take offense to this because I had a real POS as my first car that I wanted them to pimp out.
FujimiLover Posted August 15, 2009 Author Posted August 15, 2009 I meant nothing by it at all. My only comment was how they put wheels on a car that are worth way more than the car its self. I've had a few cars too where I wish were pimped out, but if I handed theme my key's, I had no option's as to how I wanted it done. I think that is one downside to these shows. It's up to the shop how to build up the car, not to the owner. I doubt any owner had the opportunity to say, "I don't like this color, or I don't want that put in." I think it's awesome to see what they can do to a car, especially the rare and unusual ones that you'd never THINK of pimping! I also feel very happy for those lucky people who get their daily-drivers fixed up as you said, that is their only mode of transportation and they deserve to get it "pimped". All those shows are great to watch in deed, some are just more fun than others. The episodes that really touch me are the ones where they can't fix up the current car and actually purchase a brand spanking new car for the deserving person. Next time, I'll use the term "clunker" rather than POS. Okay? Cool? Good.
FourFourty Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 I definitely see your point, but man it makes for good entertainment. From a piece of ###### to a waste of money. Thats how I see it.
george 53 Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 I haven't watched that show in so long, I didn't even know X-ibit wasn't the host anymore!
FujimiLover Posted August 15, 2009 Author Posted August 15, 2009 Yea, I have no idea who's doing it now. Now Speed Channel has taken over and it's funny cause whenever the "customer" sais, "Please, MTV, pimp my ride!" Speed Channel blank's out MTV part. So it's now, "Please..............pimp my ride!" We all know the show originated on MTV, who are they trying to kid? Granted it's copy-right stuff, but still. Can't Speed Channel make up their own show? I hate to say this, but ever since Speed Vision changed to Speed Channel, they went down hill and I'm not as excited to watch that channel as I used to be back in the day's.
george 53 Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 Oh Yeah,Fuje, you got that right! Since they changed, they HAVE gone downhill! They USED ta show those neet races from OZ an them little cars were REAL screamers! I sure do miss watchin them.Nick F-40 turned me onto the EARLY mornin races(like 2:00 or 3 in tha mornin!) when they do still show them, but again, I haven't figgered out how to record them. Time ta call Joy again!!!
Harry P. Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Shows like "Pimp My Ride" have NOTHING to do with "reality." It's all about sponsorship and making money. It's "TV," not real life! Shows like this are totally sponsor driven and 100% scripted and worked out beforehand. If some wheel manufacturer puts up the $$$, they'll put those wheels on the car. It's all about "product placement,"... that is, who paid the bucks to have their stuff featured on the show. Seriously, you guys can't really believe that what you see happening on shows like this is "reality," can you???
FujimiLover Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 LOL! Of coarse not Harry, we just think it's great entertainment. No matter how you look at it, it's still ridiculous to put so much money into a car that's not worth the efforts. If I personally had the money to upgrade a car to that degree, I might as well just buy a better car and be done with it. I very rarely believe in anything I see on TV. Reality show's? Reality my butt! Maybe reality-based, but certainly isn't real world. I'd like to go back to Unique Wips, much more realistic than PMR. At least with U.W., your dealing with a real shop, real "tech's," and real cars that are worth the money and efforts. I'm sure even some of that is scripted as well. Anything seen on tv is scripted including the news! About the only thing real on TV would be Sherif John Benell's "World's Wildest Police Video's". THAT is entertainment!
Harry P. Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 LOL! Of coarse not Harry, we just think it's great entertainment. No matter how you look at it, it's still ridiculous to put so much money into a car that's not worth the efforts. It has nothing to do with putting money into a car that's not worth it. The whole show is nothing more than a disguised commercial for the stuff they throw on the car. The value of the car vs. the value of the parts they put on it are totally irrelevant. It's all about getting the sponsored parts in front of a TV audience and hoping that as many people as possible go out and buy those parts. The value of the car vs. the value of the parts used on it isn't ever a consideration.
FujimiLover Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 I know, I've done the same thing when I owned an 88 CRXSI. I never got any of it back when I traded it in for the Insight. It was such a waist of money cash wise, but I learned an awful lot from that car. Unfortunately, my new Insight is not as easy to work on as those CRX's were back in the day. Harry, I hear exactly what you are saying it is a lot of advertisement. Let's not forget our beloved movie Transformers. Great entertainment, but was a load of ad's for Apple and GM. In both cases, the producers are smart enough to advertise in a more entertaining way than say those lousy info-mercials. You know, I've always wondered with all the shop-at-home networks, why don't they just throw all TV ad's there instead of bugging us people who actually want to watch the show. Those people that enjoy "shopping at home" can enjoy the ads as thats what their watching most of the time anyway. I've made my point at the beginning of this thread and I'm not hear to argue with anybody. It's all great entertainment no matter how you look at. Weather it is a big advertisement for companies, or putting ridiculous wheels on a silly little car. However you wish to put it, the point is, we remember it and that's what THEY THE PRODUCERS WANT!
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 I've also caught an episode or two, and some of the things they do to those cars is RIDICULOUS! I seen them put 7 LCD TV screens in one car! And some of those paint jobs, YUCK! There was one guy on there that kept crashing his car. After it was "pimped out", he crashed it again! He even totaled off the rental car the producers gave him! I would NEVER want my Mustang done by him and those clowns. I'd want it done by Chip Foose.
James Flowers Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 I would like too know how some of those people could afford to insure the car after it is pimped? Since they are to poor to even do anything to their cars before. You know they would have liability insurance if any at all.
FujimiLover Posted August 17, 2009 Author Posted August 17, 2009 Their insurance coverage should be pimped as well! LOL! Maybe our friendly little green lizard should have a pimped out ride and advertise on the show! LOL!
sfhess Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 From what I've seen and heard, none of these shows is worth spending the time to watch.

Harold Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Yeah- how is all the garbage they hang on one of these relics going to increase the vehicle's performance? A Nissan Pulsar is slow enough without adding another #500 of stuff to make it even slower...

It's not about horsepower or torque, but how many watts do the amps have and how big are the wheels?
