Dr. Cranky Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Does that mean you might wear the one piece PJs out there? Very scary!!! Jim, I'm trying my best not to get arrested! Virgil, those latest photos you posted are excellent. The way you set the camera angle, the way the diorama blends seamlessly with the "real" background... those photos could pass as "real." Thank you, Harry. I am going to take a whole bunch more tomorrow. This stuff gets to be addictive.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Dr. Cranky wrote: "Chuck, what is it about being outside with your models you hesitate over?" To that, I add a sidebar---> Beware Shooting in the Full Sun! I took this shot out in the sun when I realized that there IS no light source, other than the sun, that can produce those sharp defined shadows convincingly. I set up the tabletop and "set pieces" outside, put the car and figures in place before I went to the camera to adjust settings. I swear, not more than two minutes later I was set up, framed and ready to go! A small nudge to the car and ... and ... it was hotter than s**t! I quickly moved it to the shade where it cooled. After that, it was frame the shot, put the car and figures in place for a few seconds, expose the film (it was nineties), then move them back to the shade. The sun can be hot! (doh) To the right of my shot is a shot of the real thing. PS: Haha MikeMc, I must have been at least 30 feet tall here! Oh yeah, Roger, you have to wear a hat, keep the sun off. Usually I find the best times are either in the morning or mid afternoon, but if you want those shadows, then yes, you are going to have to brave the heat. Great pictures though.
Mr. Moparman Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Here is what I was able to produce using a white pillow case draped over a box. This photo has been slightly sharpened and brightened I defiantly have seen clarity improvement in my pictures from these two right here.
Tony T Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Doc! Man, those pictures are awesome! You found the perfect location for the HtH! Nice! Look forward to seeing more pics!
Dr. Cranky Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Thanks, Brandon, for sharing your work. A white sweep is often all you need for good photos. Tony, thanks, tomorrow I am going back out if it doesn't rain and taking more photos.
Rmodeler Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Brandon, nice! Like the Dr. says, big sheet of white paper works very well too!
Dr. Cranky Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 All right, I'm heading back out for another round of pictures . . . I hope to have a good day out there. Stay tuned in.
Tony T Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 I hope you remembered your chair this time, Doc!
Mr. Moparman Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Thanks guys, I going to experiment around today to see what works best for me.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Brandon, that's where the fun is. If you go to the craft store or an arts supply place you might be able to find a roll of white paper you can probably use as a sweep. Good luck. Looking forward to some more photos and eye candy.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 So this morning I set up shot earlier in the same spot and took about another 80 pictures, most of them not as good as I had expected, but I did get some interesting ones: I even lit a stoggie and played around with smoke: I think next time I return I will probably do a shoot during a sunny day . . . hoping the light will be better for the pics. Too many of them turned out blurry . . . The beauty of digital is that you can go crazy shooting as many pictures as you want, and then you cull down to the ones you like.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Here are just a couple more: Of course, this one is my favorite:
MikeMc Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 HOME RUN!!! Love the angles !! you have some beauties today Virgil!.....The controlled burn is a great idea!
Dr. Cranky Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Mike, you and Harry always amaze me with your PS magic. Thanks for the kind words. I think this stuff is just as much fun as building models. You can quickly burn through several memory cards playing with photos. I hope people will continue to share and post their PHOTO experiments and fun here . . .
Rmodeler Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 (edited) Well, you asked Dr .. this is a "phantom view" i tried. I took an exposure with the body work on, then one with it off. Using both files in PS, I did this transparency and jagged cut-away effect. Edited February 18, 2012 by Rmodeler
Dr. Cranky Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Roger, that's one beautiful model. Why do I get the feeling I have seen it before. Was this part of one of your dioramas? Do you have a Fotki archive? You should start one and keep all your builds there. Let me know. Best, DC
Rmodeler Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Dr. C., the image is rather old (like it's maker lol), it was done in the nineties and you are right, you saw it as part it of a futuristic F1 garage diorama I did. No fotki or picasa, but my website rogersmodels.com has all the stuff. Thanks for the kind words PS: MikeMc: NIce set of pictures ;-) You are good.
Foxer Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 The dio photos keep looking better and better. The cigar smoke one was a good effect and deserves more experimentation with it.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 (edited) Roger, I found it! Thank you. For those interested, please check out Mr. Yu's amazing work here: http://www.rogersmodels.com/ Edited February 18, 2012 by Dr. Cranky
Dr. Cranky Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 The dio photos keep looking better and better. The cigar smoke one was a good effect and deserves more experimentation with it. Mike, I am looking into a smoke machine or fog machine. I can't smoke cigars in the morning like that without turning a little green!
Foxer Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 (edited) Mike, I am looking into a smoke machine or fog machine. I can't smoke cigars in the morning like that without turning a little green! Isn't that what Eyegore is for???? Edited February 18, 2012 by Foxer
Dr. Cranky Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Both Mikes have great ideas. Get a bee smoker and still have EYEGORE smoke the cigar while I take the photographs. Brilliant!
Rmodeler Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Michael Paul Smith is one of the masters of this "foreground model / background real" technique. Although the cars are all diecasts, there is much to learn from his images and anecdotes. This link is just one example of many you will find there...
