diymirage Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 (edited) hey guys ive been on the forum for a while now but this will be my first big rig project (all my others were cars) as some of you may know im Dutch and i now reside in the US last year for my birthday my parents bought me a revell of germany car transport it has been in my stack untill i had the chance to build this with a DAF tractor (for those of you who never heard of this truck builder DAF is a dutch company and it is one of the largest truck manufacturers in europe, as a mather of fact when i was about half my age i used to run dirtbike in the woods surrounding thier proving grounds) the day that i will be able to build a DAF tractor is now fast aproaching because i bought one for the wifey for her to give to me this Christmass in anticipation i opened up the transporter today and started some work on the frame there are at least two peices that got damaged in the travels (my parents bought this kit in the Netherlands and brought it over last year) but i think i can fix them now for some pics a stock photo of the truck and the transporter Edited December 20, 2009 by diymirage
diymirage Posted December 20, 2009 Author Posted December 20, 2009 (edited) And here are some shots of the transporter on the sprues I added a 1/25 plymouth GTX to the picture to show the size of this kit And here is a shot of the broken part I think I can fix it but worst case scenario I can scratchbuild a new ladder My first thought on this kit was to replicate a rig from a existing Dutch company but I was unable to find one online that used the right combination of tractor trailer and had a paintsceme I like so this will be a imaginary Dutch company with a paint sceme that I stole from an existing wood fiber company i figured once this tractor (1) is done and the trailer (2) is done i can slap my GTX (3) my sardine challenger (4) my T/A challenger (5) my hemi cuda (6) my hemi cuda/superbird (7) and maybe another charger (8) on there and put it in the livingroom as one model hereby succesfully bupassing the wifies "one model at a time on display" rule Feel free to comment on and make suggestions to the build Edited December 20, 2009 by diymirage
Jim B Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 this should be an interesting build. Do they use this transporter trailer in Europe? I was under the impression that it was an old design. Never really having seen euro-trucks up close & personal, I must say that I'm partial to the DAF. I really like the way it looks. Good luck on your build, and don't forget to post progress pics.

Good luck on your build, and don't forget to post progress pics. i have been able to find only a few decent pictures of transporter trailers from the Netherlands and most of them were different then this one it seemed without execption the tractors pulling them were daycabs and the trailer was build (at least partially) on the tractors frame, allowing one more car to sit on top of the cab. much like this outfit right here so i will be taking some artistic freedoms in this build partially because there are so few people on here who have ever seen a daf that i can get away with it

diymirage Posted December 20, 2009 Author Posted December 20, 2009 it will be nice to see the build coming on its nice to see you building a daf they must seem strange to people in the states being a truck driver and truck model builder for many years are you still able to get any of the old amt/ertl 1/25 trucks there as they are getting very rare here now i keep looking but not much luck upto yet ill have to put some pics of mine on here when i get use to the site as im new on here but good luck with the build and look forward to seeing the pics mey marc, welcome to the forum it will be a fe more days untilli can get working on the DAF since i wont get it untill Christmass i can understand how these trucks might look strange but the idea behind it is quite simple im most european countries there is a legal limit to how long a truck combination is allowed to be so every inch of hood that sticks out in front of the truck is an inch of the combination that can not be used to carry a payload so by placing the cab on top of the engine there is less of the total length used for the tractor and more can be used for the trailer to actualy place loads on i did manage to get the ladderframe for the trailer put together but now i am faced with a choice on paint and that will determine how much more i will put together before painting it
diymirage Posted December 20, 2009 Author Posted December 20, 2009 got a lil bit done about the frame again all you see will be first painted a dark bleu then the fenders will be painted silver (to match the cab) and the contact surfaces of the running boards will be painted metal

Old Albion Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 When considering purchasing model kits internationally beware!!! Unless you are fully conversant with customs invoicing and understand the costs involved. I would leave it well alone. I have bought many kits form the US and other countries. The best places to look are Ebay but also check the afternmarket suppliers. For example Sourkrauts http://sourkrautsmodeltrucks.com/ I have just ordered the White Freightliner plus some other equipment from Chris. Very efficient operation. Sent me an Email the day after to let me know he had shipped. With regards to Ebay you need to check sellers that ship worldwide. Also get your self a Paypal account it will make things alot easier. But when buying internationally watch the shipping costs. If you bought the WF kit I would expect the shipping cost to be $26.00 upwards. But this isn't the end of it depending which carrier is used when it gets here to Britain you will be hit for import duty. This all depends on the information on the customs documentation that is attached to the box. The shipper really has to know the ins and outs of it. You will probably find that the cost of getting the kit here is more than the cost of the kit itself. Hope this helps Dave

diymirage Posted December 26, 2009 Author Posted December 26, 2009 well as i suspected i got the truck yesterday after a quick once over there were two parts broken in the truck aswell one of them is the fifthwheel track the other is one of the front fenders and here is my big gripe with this kit then frame is one modelded piece all the ladder sections the bottom of the engine (it is a curbside kit) the front fenders the fuel tank and a few more little details it is clear italeri kits are not in stride with the quality i have come to expect from revell at any rate i put a coat of primer down and then painted both frames i airbrushed a coat of bleu on but im not happy with the results (hence the lack of pictures) so tomorrow i will slap on a new coat of bleu

diymirage Posted December 26, 2009 Author Posted December 26, 2009 where are you located marc ? none of those trucks are very common in the US and that where the majority of our members are from so im just curious one thing that really annoys me with this unibody cheap trick is that it makes it very hard to paint and detail things i guess the only brightside to it is that i sitll got this kit for about 1/3 the price of a revell but it does show in the quality

diymirage Posted January 12, 2010 Author Posted January 12, 2010 allright this is all the progress ive made so far ive started painting the frame its a real pain because so much of it is molded in fuel tanks, fenders, battery box, bottom half of the engine, you name it i also BMFed the checker like plates that go on the back fo the frame behind the cabin why this part did not come chromed ill never know but i think i did allright i also cut out all the cabin sections and cleaned them up as soon as i get the paint booth cleared out ill aplly some primer and shoot a few coats of mettalic silver i will also paint the read fenders and several parts of the trailer to match as you can see i started putting together the cabin spoiler this is the first DAF ive ever build and im having a hard time getting all the right tints and colours figured out so if anyone has any input that would be apreciated
