Nick Winter Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 when A vehicle calls for stripes, which method of stripes do you prefer, stripe decals or to paint the stripes.
astroracer Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 (edited) Paint, every time, for a number of reasons. Decals just don't look right on a glossy paint job. Spraying decals with clear is a krap shoot as they may wrinkle. Light colored decals over a dark base will look mottled. Mark S. Edited February 6, 2010 by astroracer
Jordan White Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Depends for me. Paint if it is a more basic design, and decals for more complex designs.
Longbox55 Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Depends for me. Paint if it is a more basic design, and decals for more complex designs. Same here. It also depends on what type of stripe is being used, like say a musclecar stripe package vs a custom vehicle.
Railfreak78 Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 I'm not very experienced with paint stripes and a lot of times I leave an edge where the tape was. Any suggestions? Nick I'd say take some junkers and practice now. These guys are right about decals and I even got mad at them on my 76 Chevy. Now I'm 31 and cant stripe to save my life Good luck bud

VW Dave Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 (edited) I agree that it depends on the individual build, but I voted for paint. Ever since I tried Tamiya's masking tape, I'm a big fan of painting them on; sometimes, however, decals are the better choice. Edited February 8, 2010 by VW Dave

Ever since I tried Tamiya's masking tape, I'm a big fan of painting them on; sometimes, however, decals are the better choice. Same thing here Dave, before I started using Tamiya Masking tape I would have decalled stripes, but lately, I seem to crack out the paint before I do the decals.
Railfreak78 Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Thanks for the advice on the tape. I do use 3M blue tape but it's still to think. I'll have to get some Tamiya. I am quickly becoming a fan of them as I have never touched anything from them until this last month and wow.
Bainford Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 I frequently use BMF as a masking medium. It's very thin so there is very little edge build-up. However, I haven't tried the 'new and improved' stuff yet. From what I hear it may not be as user friendly.
MrObsessive Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 For straight stripes, I highly recommend Tamiya tape! The clear stuff is Parafilm..............great for masking off larger areas that you don't want to be oversprayed.
curt raitz Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 I will do both...depending on how wide and complex the stripe(s) are. if pinstriping, i'll use decals... never had a problem clearcoating over decals (use Modelmasters Ultra Gloss Clearcoat) two mist coats followed by a heavy coat usually always have to clearcoat over stripes to knock the edges down, wether painted or decaled the advantage of decals over painting is...paint doesn't kreep under a decal!
Nick Winter Posted February 10, 2010 Author Posted February 10, 2010 For straight stripes, I highly recommend Tamiya tape! that's what I use it for, well that and 2 Tone's, BTW Bill that's a nice looking Mustang you built.
