Pete J. Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 (edited) I was having a chat with some friends the other day, and the subject turned to car as it often does. We got to talking about names and came to the conclusion that there were not a lot of production cars with English names of fish. In fact we could only come up with three - Barracuda/'cuda, Marlin and Stingray. We didn't include names like Mako Shark because that was a show/prototype car. We were only after production cars. Anybody out there with other names? If it is a rare or unusual car, if you could throw a photo up, that would be nice. Have fun with this one. Edited March 6, 2010 by Pete J.
David G. Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Wow, that's a stumper! Do you think that maybe you and your friends have too much time on your hands? I think you've come up with all of them, at least as far as I know.
Modelmartin Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 This is a stretch. Honda Pilot. There is a pilot fish. I know! Lame.
Pete J. Posted March 6, 2010 Author Posted March 6, 2010 Opel Manta Now that's one I didn't know about. I believe it was sold in the US as a Kadett GT.
B_rad88 Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 ah here you go: Plymouth Barracuda: http://www.amcarguide.com/wp-content/gallery/barracuda/1965-plymouth-barracuda-formula-s.jpg Corvette Stingray: http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs31/f/2008/235/f/d/black_Corvette_Stingray_427_by_Partywave.jpg AMC Marlin: http://amcrc.com/photos/66Marlin-Rear.jpg and also the Opel Manta noted before.
B_rad88 Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 (edited) The Hyundai Tiburon, as "Tiburon" is Spanish for shark. huh, didn't know that, lol! Tiburon pic: http://images01.olx.com.ph/ui/4/88/32/65758632_2-Hyundai-Tiburon-Sports-Coupe-sold-by-owner-Quezon-City.jpg Edited March 6, 2010 by B_rad88
diymirage Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 The Hyundai Tiburon, as "Tiburon" is Spanish for shark. which is why a lot people (myself included) refer to the newer models tiburons as tuscanis (the korean badge) since they lack the gills which were so prominent in the 03-06 models
Nick Winter Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 You make it harder because there were a bunch of prototypes, in addition to Mako Shark there was the AMC Tarpon which was the Rambler-based prototype of the Marlin to name one...but.... There was a model of the Chevy Nova in the 1970s called "Shark" which was a cheap attempt to cash in on the popularity of the movie "Jaws" I think they only built them in '76 Mark, I'm pretty sure, but hey we all can be wrong.
Chuck Most Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 huh, didn't know that, lol! It's funny, when that car first came out, the TV ads actually said "Tiburon...it's Spanish for 'shark'." You can tell you are scraping bottom for a car name when you have to tell people what the name means in the ads! The AMC concept that spawned the Marlin was called the Tarpon. Does a fish-named concept count?
Harry P. Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 I figured I'd give it a try, just for the halibut... I'm sitting here on my perch, floundering around trying to think up fishy car names, but holy mackerel, the sole names I can think of have already been mentioned before.

Karmodeler2 Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 They did...1976 was during the 70s, wasn't it? FWIW "Jaws" came out in 1975, so the car being out in '76 makes sense. Amazing there wasn't a "Star Wars" Nova for '78. Remember, Math class can be tough for some. And 4 out of 3 people have problems with fractions. David
