awan Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Hey guys, some of you may have read up on my questions regarding two truck builds (International 4400 and Chevy Kodiak/GMC Topkick)in my self-introduction thread below, so I apologize for the repost but I feel that if there's a dedicated thread, readers might be more likely to see the topics. So, I'm trying to build a model of a a Chevy Kodiak or GMC Topkick (essentially the same vehicle I'm led to believe?). This photo was my main inspiration: http://www.frankscustom.com/images/IMG_1737.JPG (watch out it's pretty large)I'd like the built the crew-cab version, with the 19.5" wheels/tires as seen in the pic. Having never built a truck model in my life, but armed with some scratchbuilding experience on aircraft and armor models I think I should be able to tackle this project. However, I am having some trouble getting dimensions/drawings of said vehicle and also finding possible donor kits/aftermarket parts. Any leads are appreciated, again, I'm totally new at truck modeling -Anthony
Jim B Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 (edited) For this GMC, you could go with the All Season's Collectable Toys GMC Topkick which is a 1999: http://sourkrautsmodeltrucks.com/?page_id=3&category=2&product_id=28. Here's his crew cab version: http://sourkrautsmodeltrucks.com/?page_id=3&category=2&product_id=536. Plaskit makes a hood conversion: http://sourkrautsmodeltrucks.com/?page_id=3&category=6&product_id=84 Daniel makes good stuff. You can get a hold of him at plaskit_resin@yahoo.ca As for a base kit: you'll need an AMT Chevy Silverado kit AND an AMT Ford LN8000 kit. Lo-Pro tires couldn't hurt either. http://sourkrautsmodeltrucks.com/?page_id=3&category=9&product_id=109 As for an engine, well you'll have to modify the one in the Silverado kit as there are currently no resin Class 5 engines available. I think the Caterpiller 3208 from the Ford LN8000 kit will be too big. You need a Cheyy Big Block V-8. Hope this helps. Edited March 23, 2010 by Jim B
Blake Rogers Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 what i don't under stand is the small rims/wheels used on the 1:1's?
awan Posted March 23, 2010 Author Posted March 23, 2010 what i don't under stand is the small rims/wheels used on the 1:1's? Personally, I love the look of the smaller wheels, but I have no idea why they use them on the 1:1 trucks.

rollinoldskoo Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 the resin mentioned above is more like this one i made.... the newer ones are a different body
Sergey Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 the resin mentioned above is more like this one i made.... the newer ones are a different body Very Impressive Pick Up, although it has many inaccuracys: GMC badge on the grill and "Chevrolet" on the rear gate. 22,5' wheels & uder Cab fuel tank with Pick Up body is quite a custom. Have you used PickUp bed from Silverado?
awan Posted March 25, 2010 Author Posted March 25, 2010 Impressive builds guys! Thanks for sharing. Does anyone have access to three-view drawings or any dimensions in general of the newer model Kodiaks and Topkicks? Someone shared a few 'body-builder' PDF links in my International 4400 thread..was hoping maybe there'd be something similar for the Topkick/Kodiak. -Awan

O-Key, my mistake. Peace. Can you share some pictures of the prototype (the real PickUp) for your model? I'm collecting the information to build my own 90's Top kick using Perry's Resin Cab: http://www.perrysresin.com/catalog/pics/p_topkick.jpg Edited March 25, 2010 by Sergey

I printed off some spec sheets...and I've got a couple of good hi-res top/side/front/back view shots that I've been measuring and scaling to size. Thanks for the link!
Rob Hall Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 (edited) Those older ones have a totally different cab than the '03-09 models, though. The '93-02 Topkick/Kodiak cab is based on the '88-98 Silverado style cab, while the '03-09 are based on the full size van (Savanna/Express). I'd love to have in 1:25th the 'Ironhide' Topkick from the Transformers movie. Edited March 26, 2010 by Rob Hall

I'm after the 2003-2010 cab design...I may actually end up scratchbuilding...just because the cab available is somewhat pricey for something I'm going to be chopping up. I will however buy most details aftermarket...but I supposed scratchbuilding truck components is much easier than aircraft components...so I should be ok. I've got a bunch of drawings and photos so I think I've got it covered. Just bought a huge stock of Evergreen plastics online..so I can get started as soon as they show up.

O, I will follow the rpoces. I plan to scratchbild "Ironhide"/TopKick too (after Custombilt 379 & Paulie Houling's "Love Mashine"). Good luck. Edited March 27, 2010 by Sergey

Also, I just got my order of Evergreen sheet/stock today..ordered a couple of the "Odds & Ends" bulk packs along with tube and sheet assortment sets so I should be pretty good to get started scratchbuilding whenever I find a Ford kit for a chassis to mess with. (Any chance that someone here has a parts kit sitting around I could get off you for a good price?) -Awan Edited March 31, 2010 by awan
Jim B Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Yes, that's the Ford LN8000 I was talking about. As for the Silverado, yes, you'll still need that kit, too. I think you used the engine & interior from that kit. If you go with the Plaskit hood, you'll need the cab from it as well.

Jim B Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 No, sorry, I don't. But i would guess that anyn of the AMT Silverado kits would do as you're just going to take the cab & interior from it.
rollinoldskoo Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 you need the DG productions van for the right cab.....
