scouperacer Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 My grandfather ran late model races in the early 60's around Chicago, and I've had a picture of him in his car on my wall in my hobby room for years. I always wanted to do the model but never liked the kit choices for a 57' Chevy 150. So I figured I'd try out the Revell Black Widow version of the 150 to make a replica of his old 1:1. I dont think I'll be doing it exactly like his car, (beat up) but how it would have looked at the begining of the season. I scanned a copy of the picture I will be base this off of. I ordered the kit so it should be here Tuesday I cant wait to get started. Oh yeah, and im planning on getting it finished by June so I can give it to him for his birthday. Guest Johnny Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 I believe he ran at Raceway Park and maybe Santa Fe too! Saw a lot of great racing up there as a kid!

High octane Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Scouperacer, I remember being at O'Hare Stadium back in the mid 60's and it was a good time! I hope that your project turns out well and I'll be watching for it.

scouperacer Posted March 29, 2010 Author Posted March 29, 2010 Heres a couple more update pics. Im looking for number decals #16 as in the picture they are yellow. Is there anything close to that out there? If not I might try my hand at printing them. Alslo I'm looking for a wheel/tire combo. It stll needs some paint work, and other small details. Its getting there though, let me know what you guys think.
Hornistfuller Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 maybe its just a pipe dream, but those front rims look like ww2 jeep wheels.
scouperacer Posted March 29, 2010 Author Posted March 29, 2010 (edited) maybe its just a pipe dream, but those front rims look like ww2 jeep wheels. Yeah they have some similarities, but the Jeep wheel has a larger center hole for the bigger hubs, and they are two piece inners and outers bolted together. Edited March 29, 2010 by scouperacer
Foxer Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Looking good. These kinds of builds of a vehicle with memories are the best.

Gary Davis Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I agree with you Scoup...knowing the driver(especially when it's family) really makes the build a little more special. This is looking great...keep us posted on you progress.
scouperacer Posted April 6, 2010 Author Posted April 6, 2010 Got a little more done. I'll have to fix the stripes i had a little bit bleed through the tape. Sorry about the pic, its hard to take a pic of a white car with the flash.
Deckerz Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 looks great so far, when its done are you going to polish it? it will look more authentic if you don't but its your choise.
Jon Cole Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Great project! I know many here don't approve of using vinyl for graphics, but as I look at the b&w pic, it occurs to me that if I couldn't get a decal made of the number, I would make a cardboard template, and cut it out of vinyl. I have several colors, all from Hobbytown, and is available in sheets about 6" x 36". After it is applied, run an extra fine Sharpie black marker around the edge of the vinyl... practice on a scrap piece first. The vinyl is not as thick as would be expected. Just a thought.
scouperacer Posted April 7, 2010 Author Posted April 7, 2010 Thanks for the comments and tips, guys. I dont plan on polishing or clearcoating this one, I like the light sheen it has naturally. I like the idea of the vinyl for the numbers. Does it have adhesive backing?
