Nick W. Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 I was wondering if anyone knew the best way to scratch build the W/T grill for the 88-98 Chevy and GMC trucks. I have a good grill as a base, but was wondering what to do for the single headlamps.
Chuck Most Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 If you can find the old All American grille from the early '90's, that might save you a little work. The headlamps for converting to the dual halogen W/T style would be easier- I think getting the grille inserts to look right would be a bit more of a challenge!
envious8420 Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 i cant find mine atm, but what about the grille from the usa1?
Chuck Most Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 i cant find mine atm, but what about the grille from the usa1? All the issues of the USA-1 kit I've ever seen had the '90-'93 Silverado grille with the composite headlamps. I don't think the W/T grille was ever offered in the kits.

Nick Winter Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 (edited) did this for free, it's done using things almost every modeller has, wire (what I used for spark plug wire) Bondo or filler, Superglue, regular model cement and sandpaper, took me about 30 minutes to plan, an hour or 2 to build, then a few hours to prime and paint. did a '94 GMC one the same way, Edited May 19, 2010 by Dukefan69'
Nick Winter Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Nick, those two examples of grilles you made werent "free" there is both time and materials tied up in both of those grilles correct? you had to buy the materials at some point to use and you have at least two kits there that donated thier grilles to the projects. we'll guestimate your material cost at $5 just to start. then we have your time invested. lets put your "labor" rate at $5 too which i think is what you'd make as minimum wage at a paying job. by your admission you have around 5 1/2 hours into the W/T grille alone. that's over $30 just in one grille. not really "free", see what i'm getting at? sometimes buying an aftermarket piece that you need or want is the best thing to do. for what you have invested into just one grille, you could buy at least 4-5 of the resin ones and probably have a nicer rendition of the W/T grille than you were able to make on your own. Dave Dave most everything I used were free to me or I bought for another build looooooooooooooooooong ago.
Aaronw Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Not trying to be a total smart-alec, but did any of you try a Google search? I found this by typing in "W/T grille resin" in about 10 seconds. Scroll down and you'll find a 25/3500 cab kit that comes the the grille, and the grille itself (listed for a Tahoe) seperately...never dealt with the company but this seems a lot easier than making one. Uptown Automotive I've bought stuff from Uptown Automotive, its good quality stuff when he has it in stock, good service too.
Nick W. Posted May 20, 2010 Author Posted May 20, 2010 Nick! Both of those builds look amazing! I still have to post the pic of the 88 I built to represent the one i used to own! Luckily the 5.7 and the 5.0 were the same! So i call the 350 a 305 lol! I will post the pics tonight!
Casey Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 This grille topic came up a few months ago in the Resin section.
