randx0 Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 (edited) I have the basics down but could use some pointers or advice to minimize rookie mistakes .I finally figured out how to draw flames and am ready to attempt on some practice bodies .I am aware of Zed's tutorial and learned a lot from it but I know there is more than one way to skin a cat and would like to hear more suggestions. Steve Keck Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 Randy, Please post a link to the tutorial you mention. I searched in the members section for ZEd and the only member I found did not have a flames tutorial listed. Thanx Steve
randx0 Posted June 21, 2010 Author Posted June 21, 2010 Randy, Please post a link to the tutorial you mention. I searched in the members section for ZEd and the only member I found did not have a flames tutorial listed. Thanx Steve Hi Steve ,Zed showed how he did his panel paint job on the second page of the mild 58 custom .I found it very helpful just to see how he approached that style of custom paint as that is the style I am looking to attempt . the flames however have not been covered in a manner that is as easy to digest .
randx0 Posted June 21, 2010 Author Posted June 21, 2010 here is what I have come up with as far as lay out of the flames . when starting, start from the back and work forward. the mantra being skinny "s" little "c" if you are drawing it,the tips should be red then orange then yellow then white for that traditional look. for areas like the hood a template should be made placed on your masking medium and folded in half so you can duplicate both sides .that is about all I have for now like I said I am getting ready to start the experimentation but this is where I am starting.

Randy, Depending on what color you used for the rest of the body you may want to re think the paint for the flames. If the car is a dark color or black it might be better if the flame area is all white first. Then work back through the yellow, orange, and finally the red flame tips. You will get better color on a white base and actually use less paint this way. G
Foxer Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 I'm getting adept at finding old posts, EXCEPT for the ones I'M looking for! Here's Zed's post that was referred to. I'm thinking of custom flames on a build, so this got my attention. I seem to remember some other post on doing flames but might be just WANTING there to be one.
randx0 Posted June 24, 2010 Author Posted June 24, 2010 Thanks Agent G. Thank you Mike. Steve I was hoping that this would become a Flames tutorial .
WickedWelder Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Wow! I love those flames! How long did it take to get it down? I would love to learn how to do flames. What tips can you share? Thanks Gary
tabsscale1 Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 Wow! I love those flames! How long did it take to get it down? I would love to learn how to do flames. What tips can you share? Thanks Gary I wathed a video on youtube andthen madesome stencils in shape about like what he used in the video just had to down size things in 1/25 scale. Here is a link to the videos i watched ed hubb does a great job in teaching it. I think i watched the videos about 20 times before i actually started the painting process. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmzawW-yeMA
randx0 Posted June 29, 2010 Author Posted June 29, 2010 (edited) re printed without permission Ok cool. Do you have an airbrush? It is seriously hard to accomplish this without one. Cans put out way too much paint in my opinion but it can be done. First I think it's better to go from light colors to the darker. Specifically after masking paint the whole flame area white. Then fog on the yellow, orange and finally the red at the tips. Forget the individual flames themselves when fogging the color on. Paint the yellow as if the mask didn't exist, then the orange then the red, sort of like bands of color across the pattern. That will give an even fade to the colors from flame to flame after removing the masking. Old skool flames were usually pinstriped in blue. This was done to hide any masking/spraying errors. A few other tips too. Flat paints will go on thinner. A good gloss coat over the whole body will tie it all together and help hide any booboo's such as paint build up on the edge of the masking. That's it in a nutshell. G Edited June 29, 2010 by randx0
gseeds Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 (edited) not sure if this is what your looking for ,but i posted this up for a few guys that were asking me to do a how to, so i whipped this one up, hope it helps with some of you Q's,gary. this for the guys that want to know the basic's of custom paint, some of the guys here are past this, but others will find this helpful { i hope }. Ok this is a very simple flame design that you can take as far as you want, its not prefect but youll get the idea, after a good wash and primer i sanded the car with 800 grit sand paper {wet}, gave it a base color of house of kolor sunrise pearl, after it dryed,i used bare metal foil as a mask, after laying it on the area i want flamed,i then I draw on some flames, with a sharpie pen, then i take my number 11 blade and cut along the draw lines, and peel back the area i want color on, remember to cut very carefully and only cut only the foil not the paint below, mask off all others areas you dont want paint,ad color of you choice, then peel and un mask and clear, there you have a fast and easy way of flaming, i would start with a bigger flame, like whats on this car, then with a little practice move on to the smaller tigther flames, i couldnt stop with just the flames i had to add a few fades, then three coats of automovtive nason clear, have fun, good luck.
