Barbo Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Hi...whats your favorite scene or theme? when building a diorama......My favorite scenes are Restaurants,Fast-Foods and Stores, not too much Gas Stations and workshops. For themes I like to do Raceways, actual and existing structures that are part of history.......Barbo.
dptydawg Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 I like to do open area as locations for my dios. I think I just like to see vehicles doing what they were designed to do. Like a backkhoe digging, a firetruck/ police cruiser at an accident, a transport getting loaded/unloaded or a pickup with a trailer in tow. I've yet to build a garage or a junkyard mainly because thats not were vehicles are suposed to be in normal circumstances. However a drive-in restaurant/truckstop does have potential. Thanks Carl Avis
Barbo Posted February 1, 2007 Author Posted February 1, 2007 Thats great.......Carl, open area dioramas are difficult to acomplish , when a diorama has a backdrop or a structure it becoms part of the scene and it completes the idea and locks the imagination . But , a open diorama must stand for it self, must look strong and complete in details, at the same time leaving space for the imagination of the spectator, ...You have that special grip...I can tell by your work.....hope to see more of your great open dioramas...........Barbo.
dptydawg Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 One of the major prblems I have with my dios is that there is no front side . This is sometimes a problem when I go to shows. My current project, which is a consruction scene in a gravel pit, will be housed in an old TV cabinet. That way I will have a restricted viewing angle. I won't have to worry about the back side of everything looking right. I still working on the models for it and haven't started on the diorama part yet Thanks Carl Avis
Barbo Posted February 1, 2007 Author Posted February 1, 2007 Hi..dptydawg.. when ever you can, post photos to see how this diorama is going ...your comment seems interesting ,"NO FRONTS" ?, it's not always important, What matter is, how you can grab the spectator's attention... that is called a succesfull diorama....Barbo
Mike Whatshisname Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 Anything Route 66-like. Love those structures and textures used back-in-the-day!
Barbo Posted February 6, 2007 Author Posted February 6, 2007 Hi....Mike Napoleon...I have two great books , maybe you have them but if you do not ...they have photos and history information of the fast foods of the 50's and 60's.....''AMERICAN ROADSIDE MEMORIES'' and ''ROUTE 66 REMEMBERED'' both are from Michael Karl Witzel. I got them from Boarders at a very low price.........Barbo.
soonerolds Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 I guess i like anything that has lots of action. I try to make my dioramas interactive. Get the viewer involved in the scene.

pa3de8 Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 When I finally get some done I have planned a repair shop/gas station. Something I saw photos of once before. Also either a turn or straight away a Daytona with a couple cars on it. Also wanted to do a rusted out scene. I have plenty others I have diagrammed in my mind but these are my top 3. uncle potts Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 All of the diorama's I've done have been rusted relics. I like the idea of a vehicle that has been used, is past its prime, and has been forgotten by most. The viewer can use his imagination as to where its been, how it was used, and how it ended up where it is. No one comes up with the same story, which is in my opinion part of the charm behind this kind of display. Mine all have a "front " side, but can just as easily be viewed from all sides.
bpletcher55 Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 I like old and rusty ,cars ,building, trucks,i can make any thing kook old ,
Chuck Doan Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 (edited) 1/4" scale (1/48) 1/2" scale (1/24) Old gas stations and garages are favorites of mine. Route 66 subjects work for me too. I'm currently doing a small piece of an old auto court in 1/16th scale. Edited March 12, 2013 by Chuck Doan
Mercman Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 My last 2 creations both had to do with tragedies. The Last Ride, posted below, is about the demise of John Milner from the More American Graffiti movie. Before that I did the DEADMAN'S CURVE Diorama, from the Jan and Dean song.Other than that I like to try to construct a town type setting, as I am working on different types of neighborhoods. Some good, some kind of seedy looking.
BenDover78 Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 I like the old Texaco gas stations. They just had that one of a kind 50's look.

I don't see any link to your dioramas, I'd like to see both of them. Send a link if possible.
IMSANUT Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 While I have yet to build one, I have been taking photos and planning what will be my first one. Turn five at Road America. I'm somewhat surprised at the lack of race track dios I have seen.
hooknladderno1 Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Still have to start building my "Planned Project" 1913 rural firehouse from Masonville, N.J. I have decided on 1/48 scale. Another vignette I have thought about is a second or third story window of a building on fire, where a mother surrounded by smoke billowing out reaches to hand her infant to a firefighter on a ladder(either ground or aerial device)...
