DrewCfromSC Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Hello, im getting back into the model building hobby. Bought a new home recently and have a great place in my shop to renovate for modeling. Any ideas for a work bench area size, layout etc? Been building on and mostly off again since 1968. Main interst is in Volkswagen models of all types. Anyone in the South Carolina area? Any shops in the area or swap meets? Im starting from scratch again so im looking for all things. Thanks for your time. Drew
Peter Lombardo Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Just what we need, another old guy. Us old guys remember the glory days of the early 1960's when model car building was the "thing" to do before computers, video games, cell phones and DVD's. Welcome...you will do just fine here. As for what you need, just go to the local hobby shop and get one of everything...I am sure he needs the business.
disabled modeler Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Hi Drew!.... Welcome! I am sure you can find some guys around with VW stuff, I always wished they would have made a model of a Thing in 1/25th scale plastic. I have a few VW items myself but am looking for other things???
LDO Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 A cheap, but big workbench I got is a commercial door. It's 8 feet tall (long). Some guy had a bunch of them on Craigslist. I got 2 of them. one is for building models, one has my Sherline lathe & mill. The model bench has a glass door from a stereo cabinet. Glass is a great surface for a workbench because you can simply scrape off any spilled paint or glue. It's also flat; great for aligning chassis or setting down a full sheet of sandpaper and sanding something flat. I've gotten several glass doors from stereo cabinets that people are throwing away.

I agree 100% on supporting local hobby shops. I try to get everything from my LHS. If he carries it, I buy it there instead of mail ordering.
DrewCfromSC Posted July 4, 2010 Author Posted July 4, 2010 Welcome to the site Drew!!! thank you. Nice 68 in your photo. I had a 68 big block wagon a few years ago. Jim Gibbons Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Hi Drew, Welcome to the board and back to the modeling bench! I, too, am an avid VW fan, and have a few kits on the back burner. One I have to finish is the old AMT Rabbit kit that I want to build as my former 1:1 '78 Bronze Edition. I have an old can of Duplicolor bronze for it. Revell Germany has a newly tooled VW Samba (DeLuxe bus) coming out this summer, and is like the old 60's release with doors, etc. that open. It's a multi-piece body, though, so a bit tricky to build. It can be built US or European spec. I'll have to dig around, and may have some old mobilia, as I sold VW in the mid '80s and trained new salespeople. I do have the skeleton "push puppet" toy from the DaDaDa song Golf ad promotion from '97 or '98. Cheers, Jim

bigmikevee Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Hi Drew, Just wanted to welcome you back to this wonderful hobby. Don't have anything VW to offer, sorry, but one suggestion now that I know you are over 21....get some type of hands-free magnifier. I resisted getting one for a while because I thought I didn't need it (ok, really didn't want to admit my age....) but when I finally got one, all I can say is WOW, best investment so far. Welcome aboard the best of the best are here, and I hope you have as much fun returning as I did. Now...just have fun!! Mike

Im currently looking for an early split window or oval real car too. Thanks for your time. Drew

Looking online at some possibilities now. Magnifying glass light sounds good too! Drew

Jim Gibbons Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Drew, I'll let you know if I come across anything. I wish I still had the brochure my dad gave me when I was a kid. It was the one that had that "fanciful" illustrative color artwork that was a little distorted, but oh, so cool. I colored a lot of it with a green magic maker! I came home from my birth in a '59 Beetle, my older sister in a Polar Silver '57 oval window; would love to have that '57 today! I'll keep my eyes and ears open for a split or oval; I used to help judge vintage VW at the Rhinebeck Antique Car Show here in NY, and still have a lot of my VW contact friends. Could have gotten you a good deal on a very decent black '57 oval about 8 years ago from a Culinary Institute of America student that used it as his daily driver! Oh, well! My friends Doug and Pam have quite a stable of vintage VWs; they show their black '56 "Rudi" with various vintage display items, i.e. ski theme, plaid picnic cooler and accesories theme, etc. The car has been in Hot VWs mag and others over the years. Pam has a really nice '59 Karmann Ghia convertible that I was lucky to get a ride in some time ago. I'll give them a call and see if they have any leads on a 1:1.
Gregg Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Welcome, Drew I bet you're going to buy a case of the Meyer's Manx Dune Buggies when they come out, right?
DrewCfromSC Posted July 6, 2010 Author Posted July 6, 2010 Drew, I'll let you know if I come across anything. Memories are the best! Thanks for sharing. Drew from S.C.
DrewCfromSC Posted July 6, 2010 Author Posted July 6, 2010 Welcome, Drew I bet you're going to buy a case of the Meyer's Manx Dune Buggies when they come out, right? Maybe? Well might just buy a couple of kits. Last time I bought a case of models it turned into 7 cases, but that was another time from a Western Auto store. Ah thanks for the memories! Sold them all to Hobby Heaven I think? Drew from S.C.
