rdgracer71 Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 has anyone ever scratched built a air filter for a 1/25 scale model.... this is what kind im talking about... im gonna try and make one...just wanted to know if anyone else has....
Jantrix Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I haven't ever build one like that as there are a lot of nice ones available in the aftermarket. I did do this one.
coopdad Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I did but I started with an air filter that came in a misc. kit (AMT Ford Bronco I think). I cut off the breather tube. Then cut it in half horizontally and added some styrene to make it taller. Finally I wrapped it with fine painted sand paper to give the look of the filter stuff. Let me know if I didn't explain something well, haven't had my coffee yet. John
pharr7226 Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 (edited) I used sheet styrene, medical tape and a doming block and punch set to make the filters on this '64 GTO. I heated the plastic and pressed the punch into the appropriate hole on the block, cut it out using a punch, primed it, painted it black and hit it with alclad chrome. Here is the doming block and punch set. Edited July 30, 2010 by pharr7226
shucky Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Hi, I scratch built this open element unit for my GT500 but the concept is much the same regardless of it's size and shape. You have a top, mid section [filter area], and a base or bottom. Plus you have some material to make up the filter screen area. Here you can see much of what mine consisted of and the end result.
Steve Keck Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 RD, I constructed this air cleaner for my '69 pro touring Camaro shown in the Under Glass section. I turned the top and bottom to the housing. ScaleMaster printed the element and I painted it to replicate a K&N filter. The wing nut is from Replicas & Miniatures of Maryland. The threaded rod is from Model Doctor. The PE screen is from Tri-Part. I am answering you in more detail than you probably ever wanted to know. However there are others here who claim to scratch build when they don't. I'll leave it to you whether my air cleaner qualifies.
shucky Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Steve, I'm not sure if your referring to me regarding whether or not my unit is scratch built or not? My unit is made from styrene, aluminum tubing, and mesh. I'd call that 100% scratch built. No kit parts in my photos. The intake tube, MAF sensor, hose clamps are all scratch built in fact.

I believe that qualifies as a scratch build Steve (looks great by the way) and I dont think he was refering to you Shucky as we can clearly see you scratched yours out too great job you two!!! Mike, no my comments were not directed at you, your comments or your work or anyone else's who has posted to this topic before you. No disrespect intended. Sorry for the confusion. My comments were, however, directed at one member of the Forum that has made repeated claims of scratch building. Claims that have been challenged without response.
Agent G Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 These are commercial ones I picked up in KC years ago. All I did was polish them with some Simichrome and a Dremel. I'm not set up for machining my own yet, and may never be. I'm digging this thread, all sorts of new ideas. G

shucky Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Marcos, take a look at www.contenti.com for jewelry making items. They have a set like that and also some really great disc cutters (punch set).
