I stumbled onto this video in You Tube the other day. Apparently it is a

Kenworth W900-somthing-or-other with a Detroit Diesel 12V71 under the

hood. Now on the top of Page 39 in the soft cover version of "Building

Model Trucks" is a Peterbilt with a simillar paint scheme. I always thought

it was a cool looking 359, but I wanted to do it as a Kenworth W925. Long

prolog, but here is my question: the AMT KW W925 comes with a Cummins

straight 6 engine, would I need a bigger radiator for the DD 12V71? Also,

when did the DD come onto the market? Would I have to "update" the

model to a W900B or W900L?

Enjoy the video! Don't forget about the Dodge Bighorn!

You'd have to stretch the AMT to get that "Buzzin' Dozen" in there. Along with a bigger radiator as you pointed out. The earliest KW I ever saw with a DD V-12 was a '74 triaxle, shown here. (Actually almost bought a '76 tractor, missed out by a DAY. And a steal at $5K!) Good luck with the project, and show us some pics of your progress!

As Casey says, you need to stretch the hood on a W900. A 12V71 would not be found in a W900B or L as I believe DD quit selling the V12s for highway use before the Bs were introduced. The pics below show the engine in a '71 KW W900. AFAIK no one makes the extended hood, if I'm wrong I'd like to know it.

Casey,

Don't hold you breath! I suppose you coud say that it's a hypothetical truck right now. Currently I stuck on my Snap Pete because it's too darn cold to paint anything. Hasn't been above 20 for three weeks. Oh well! I guess I'll start a new project & paint when I can.

Jim,

Great ideas for a project. This has got me interested. I bought the Revell Kenworth Wrecker a few months ago. I checked in the box it has an extended hood. I,m not sure which W900 it is but the kit looks late 70s early 80s. It has a 3408 cat diesel which was rated at 450 HP (The 3408 fits in with the time period). The V12 Detroit was rated at 475 HP I think? so the radiators will probably be the same. One thing I've noticed on photos of trucks with the DD is they have the Radiator Shutters on them. But not sure, not an expert. I was looking for a V12 DD in after market parts but could not find one. I,m not sure if the AMT Super Boss Kenworth has V12 or a V16? Either way you might be able to do something with this kit.

Have fun and enjoy the project.

Best Wishes

Thanks for the info, guys. I'll have to check into the Revell Wrecker. Not sure where to find one. Again, this is a project for the distant future.

As far as an aftermarket 12V71, I know that Bobby Griffen offers one. It's not on his Website, but I confirmed on another board that they are still available.

Jim,

Having read your last message about Griffin having a V12 DD I contacted Sharon at Spaulding Trading and Shipping. This was the reply I got:

"No one makes a V12 Detroit presently. We used to carry one from Hendrix Mfg. and he went into semi-retirement. We do have the molds for the V12 and somewhere in the near future I am going to see if I can't get several casting out of them. Will keep your email on file and let you know when I conquer this task. (I already do casting with some of the Griffen items - Griffen made the molds and I did the casting.) We also have the molds for the 3408 Cat engine and I'll be working on that one also."

This is great news for all us modellers.

I will post any developments to keep everyone up to speed.

Best Wishes

Bobby's 12V71 wasn't offered through STS. He said that he had some, and they were $10 (US). Guess he's got them at the house or something.
