I have had good luck with Mona Lisa sizing adhesive. It is water based. I have thought about just trying varnish as well.

I use that too on occasion. For example, it worked great on the rocker trim of this cheap diecast Buick GSX. Great improvement for a few pennies and a few minutes' work.

I cringed at first glance of the GTX window trim getting foiled....then thought some wide 3M blue masking tape might help with any excessive glue.
