xbazzarex Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 i could use some tips and advice on building a garage diorama. any tips or help are greatly appreciated. basically i have been building model cars for quite some time and am looking to make a small diorama now that i can add on to later. i just need to know what kind of materials to use and how to weather it. the grass and natural stuff is pretty easy but im not sure how to go about the garage itself. i was considering using cardboard since it is easy to cut and replace. since this is my first im anticipating a few mess ups. thanks in advance.
diymirage Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 when i build mine i used an old sign for walls and the floor the sign itself is made out of foam and is about an inch thick when i got it it had a paper sticker on it and when i pulled that off it gave a nice concrete look my main advise is make it as big as possible that way you can take pictures from many angles drop in some old parts for good measure and paint is your friend heres a shot of mine
xbazzarex Posted August 26, 2010 Author Posted August 26, 2010 thanks for the idea, i never thought of using that stuff. nice car in your garage there.

Monte's Motors Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 i could use some tips and advice on building a garage diorama. any tips or help are greatly appreciated. basically i have been building model cars for quite some time and am looking to make a small diorama now that i can add on to later. i just need to know what kind of materials to use and how to weather it. the grass and natural stuff is pretty easy but im not sure how to go about the garage itself. i was considering using cardboard since it is easy to cut and replace. since this is my first im anticipating a few mess ups. thanks in advance. Walls and floors are styroform boards from Wal-mart. They are 1/4 thick and I use super glue to build. Contact paper floor covering and on some walls. Little signs on walls are from the scrap book section of Hobby Lobby. Scale Equipment ltm has good stuff too. Check out my garage in the diorama board.
diymirage Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 that reminds me i also have a aluminum plate with a contact paper on it that i use as an inlay floor for my garage to turn it into a showroom its just the stuff you use for kitchen cabinets and what not i bought it at a yard sale for 50 cents this is without the plate and this is with
xbazzarex Posted August 28, 2010 Author Posted August 28, 2010 awesome idea for the floor. im starting my build tonight, im using a cardboard base and the building will be made of the foamcore stuff. i may double to triple layer the cardboard incase i want to make uneven terrain. the cardboard is quite thick so i can hopefully make the illusion of a hills or such with a little bit of carving. im still deciding on the walls and outside not sure how to go about that yet. thanks for all the help thus far. when i find my camerea ill be throwing pics of the build and of all my cars up.
diymirage Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 remember to keep it as big as possible id say 2 by 2 by 2 feet at least you want to be able to take pictures where you can see a little past the car to give it the ilusion of being real ( i have a drag strip diorama that i build to small and i can only take pics from one angle)
Guest Gramps-xrds Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Zac, I use crescent poster board for mine, but then I don't put any interiors in them, but you could always add studs inside. This stuff is about a 1/16th on an inch thick and will need to be reinforced to keep it straight. It takes artist acrylics very well and that's what I use to age it. Here's a link to my photobucket acc. if you'd like to look at how I do them. http://s110.photobuc...-xrds/allalbums Here's what it looks like.
