Fabrux Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Also, all 4x4 GM trucks had 6 lug wheels. Factory 16 inch wheels didn't appear on GM trucks until the 1988 restyle; I think 16.5 inch rims were available on 3/4 and up trucks, though.
Longbox55 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 16s started popping up in the early '80s on GM, I want to say sometime around '83/'84 (I'll have to check on that to be sure), but even then, they were only on 3/4 ton and 1 tons. 16.5s, however, were available as an option on 1/2 ton 4x4s in some years, mainly early-mid '70s. Again, I'll have to refer to the spec guide to get the exact years/RPO codes. Also, as mentioned, all GM 1/2 ton full size 4x4s are 6 lug though '87, as are 1/2 ton 2wds at least back to '27, and 3/4 ton 2wd approx. '27-'45.
Longbox55 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Just did a quick look, seems that there was a 16" option in 1/2 ton Blazer, Suburban, and pickups in the late '60s/early '70s. It was part of the 5400# payload package, and used a 6.50-16 6 ply tube type tire. There was also a 15" 6 ply tube type as well as a 15' tubeless tire with the same option. In addition, the Wide Base Wheel option (16.5) was available on both 2wd and 4x4 trucks at least up to '70. Only available on 4x4s after that, up to '73. '74 that option was changed to the much more commonly seen 10.00-15 tire, mostly seen mounted on the 8" "Blazer Rallye" wheel (my favorite GM truck wheel, btw. Have them on my 1:1 '55).

No, nothing has been announced, but it wouldn't be a bad idea for Round2 to reissue it again, as they did reissue it in 2013 under the correct MPC label. The kit Ron wrote about in the original post was released earlier, and packaged under the AMT label by RC2, who wasn't very cognizant of either company's history: Not sure why it says "Brand New Tool", as I am pretty sure it was the same MOC kit as previous issues. Here's what the box of the 2013 reissue looked like: Pics of the original(?) issue, showing the one-piece body shell, hard plastic tires with iffy inner sidewalls, simplified construction and low parts count:
keyser Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 We really need a Bronco reissue. The Blazer is ok for what it is.
mikemodeler Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 The Blazer body is very nicely proportioned and looks good when finished. It would be nice to see this come out again, with a bit of work and some different tires, this builds nice and fills a void for Blazers of this era.
stavanzer Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 Indeed, Mike. You are correct. At least figure out a way to put dome decent tires and wheels in the kit. But, It is nice.
TarheelRick Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 Not really up to speed on Blazers, but am wondering if maybe the Revell GMC Snowplow chassis would fit under this body with some modifications?
stavanzer Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 It might need to be shortened to fit, Rick, but it is certainly worth looking at if you have both kits. You know, Monogram did tool up a Blazer of that body style? Hard to find now.

I had that kit and IIRC the body lines of the MPC Snap Blazer seemed to be more accurate, especially the front fenders and hood. The Revell snow plow is 1/24 scale, the MPC Blazer is 1/25, so the GMC Deserter pickup would be a better candidate for a donor.
Fabrux Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 Also keep in mind the MPC Blazer is a 73-74 with the full length removable roof. The Monogram kit has the 75-91 half roof. 1

But otherwise, point taken.
Bullybeef Posted March 10, 2021 Posted March 10, 2021 I’ve picked up two of the amt blazers as incomplete rebuilders recently, I am currently attempting to resurrect both one as a custom and the other as a stockish replica with added detail. These things are near impossible to find. 1
Casey Posted March 10, 2021 Posted March 10, 2021 (edited) They aren't too hard to find on eBay. There's one currently available for U.S. $50 B.I.N., one in an auction style listing at less than half that, and one sold a week ago for $45.00 U.S. Everybody's got Squarebody Blazer fever. ? I managed to find a reissue built up locally for 10.00 Canadian, rough but complete

Jordan White Posted March 11, 2021 Posted March 11, 2021 I wonder what the status is of the molds for Monogram's version of the Blazer/Jimmy? Seems like that would be a no brainer to release alongside the truck kits.

Back when Ollie's had these for $7.99, I grabbed all that I could! Still have several in the stash, built a couple of them. I hate the sunroof is molded into them, Here's one of them with tires from Scenes Unlimited
