tiltawhirl Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Im just wondering whats the point of clear coating over paint also whats the best kind of clear coat and what kind of clear coats are there? thank you the point of clear coat is that it can make the paint shiner and last longer, also u can wet sand it 2 almost or make it look like glass. theres many type of clear coat WATER BASED ACRYLIC VARNISH Water based varnishes are safe, durable, non yellowing, fast drying, have low-odor, and can be easily applied. The main problem with water based finishes is the water in the varnish can raise the grain of your wood resulting in extra sanding for you. Even so, waterbased varnishes are some of the best types of product to use on your wood work prior to baseboard installing, hanging those doors or throwing books onto a new unfinished shelf. Another thing to keep in mind is, a waterbased varnish can be applied as a top coat over a latex painted surface, like a faux finish. CLEAR EPOXY Epoxy coatings are two part mixtures, making them the most durable, hard wearing finish you can apply. I do not recommend epoxy, unless you have a good amount of paint and clear coat application experience. Epoxys can be very difficult to use, they tend to yellow quickly, or cloud over and lose their sheen in a short period of time. Epoxys should be applied by a professional painter or wood finisher. LACQUER Before the carpenters begin baseboard installing or hanging other types of wood trim and doors, I will first spray them with a lacquer finish. Lacquer builds or layers well and the more coats applied, the greater durability, depth and shine it will have. Lacquer is quick drying, somewhat water resistant, durable and beautiful looking. As a disadvantage lacquer does take some practice to spray on and can be non-forgiving when it comes to sags or runs. If you decide on lacquer as your coating of choice be sure to use a mask specificaly made for lacquer application. Filtering of lacquer prior to application may also be required. PLASTIC COAT Plastic coat is one of the hardest surfaces you can apply to a surface. Plastic coats are easy to use, fast drying and will not yellow over time. Plastic coat can be expensive if you're doing a large job like baseboard installing or finishing doors and large furniture piece. i hope this helps

CEKPETHO BCE Posted November 3, 2010 Author Posted November 3, 2010 you guys are really helpful many thanks now that i got cleat coating out of the way, i have another question. whats the difference between wet sanding and regular sanding? is there any difference in the way it's done, besides using water?
mikemodeler Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 you guys are really helpful many thanks now that i got cleat coating out of the way, i have another question. whats the difference between wet sanding and regular sanding? is there any difference in the way it's done, besides using water? Wet sanding is typically done after the color coats have been applied. The process of wet sanding is to even out the color, remove any minor imperfections and prepare it for a nice smooth coat of clear. Wet sanding is done lightly so as to not rub thru the color coat and by using water, reduces the friction and heat buildup as well as material buildup in the sandpaper. Wet sanding usually is done with very fine grits of paper-2000 and above while regular(dry)sanding can start with 320. Regular(dry) sanding is usually done as prep for primer, removing mold lines, and smoothing out any filler that may have been used on the model. It is a trial and error process, just take your time and don't be afraid to ask questions. None of us were born with the skill, we all had to learn somehow!
davyou5 Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 I was Wondering how you guys got the paint to look so smooth and how you got the Shine. I have never wet sanded before, but I may try it. Also I have used NU Polish with 6000 and 120000 grit sand papers which Gives me the shine I want, but I am still looking at a paint job that has that spotted spray look to it, any more advice on that? no u cant spary lacquer over enamel but u can put enamel over lacquer. and to brands tamiya in not a high gloss u will have a wet sand and polish it 2 a high shine. testors is the cheapest and if i remember right it high gloss clear i still wet sand and polish it,theres dupli-colors 3 step paint, primer, base coat and clear coat that u can get at autozone its like 6 buck a can but they have more colors and u can do like 2 cars with one can theres rustoleum enamel paints and krylon that u can get at wal-mart or home depot its like 4 buck 4 a 12.oz can examples testors enamel base and clear coat(3 bucks a can) krylon lacquer base and clear coat(4 bucks a 12.oz can) rustolem base and clear(4 bucks a 12.oz can) automotive paints base and 2 part clear coat this was can cost at of money this car have about 200 buck with of paint and clear on it (white 60' impala in the pic)
