JamesW Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I recently tried using Duplicolor paint, what can I use to strip it??
Eric Stone Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I've had good luck with Castrol Super Clean or some other equivalent purple stuff. Oven cleaner might work as well.
charlie8575 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Both of those, Bleche-Wite whitewall cleaner, ammonia, brake fluid and supposedly 91% alcohol will all do it. Charlie Larkin
JamesW Posted January 18, 2011 Author Posted January 18, 2011 It's been in the purple pond for over 24 hours and it hasn't budged, so I figured it wouldn't work. Any other paint I'vehad to strip is ready to scrub within a few hours. Guess I'll give it a couple more days.
Eric Stone Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 (edited) If you can manage to chip, scuff, or scrub off some of the paint and then soak it some more, it'll help get under there. Right now your paint might be acting like a hard candy shell... Most of the time Duplicolor comes off in dry flakes for me rather than dissolving or coming off like goo. JamesW Posted January 18, 2011 Author Posted January 18, 2011 I peeled a little away with my fingernail, then took a brillo pad to it and scuffed it. We'll see how it looks tomorrow.

I do know that Easy-Off works very well. I use the fume-free. It should also be remembered that Dupli-Color has apparently re-formulated their paint to some degree, so that might be a factor, too. Guest Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Try Simple Green. The only paint I've had trouble removing is flat black.
Jantrix Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Sand through to the primer in a couple spots and let the lye attack the primer rather than the paint. The paint will slough off like a snake skin.
crazyjim Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I've been using Dawn Power Dissolver recently with great success. I never remember to put on gloves with purple power and that stuff destroys my skin. The Dawn just washed away. It is more expensive than the purple stuff.
935k3 Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 I used 91% Alcohol on Duplicolor with their clear. It turned the clear to goo in 20 minutes and Stripped most of the paint within an hour. Oven Cleaner and Purple Power work better on enamel type paints. Alcohol is best for all Tamiya paints except the primers.
mcandela Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 I use engine degreaser bought at a Sam's or Costco. It comes in a black plastic gallon for almost 3 bucks. This stuff is strong!! I recommend You use gloves when handling because it will peel your hands bad. A plus on using this, it is really fast!!
RickRollerLT1 Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 DOT-3 Brake Fluid should work if you give it about 2 days to a week to totaly soften the paint into butter.
JamesW Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 I got it. Took about a week but the Purple Power worked. Thanks for all the tips fellas.
