AMT Junkyard Dog

I was wondering what the AMT Junkyard Dog kit builds up like. I am considering getting one for a dio project but for the cost I really want to see it and know how it builds up first.

If you guys have any photos or information on building it up I would appreciate it.

I don't have any photos, but when the kit was new, I had one given to me as a present. That's the only way I would ever have it. I don't know what was going through AMT's mind, but dents in the hood? The hoods on those are fiberglass; they don't dent, they break. That's just one of the flaws in a kit full of them. Save your money, and buy one of the recently released Mack kits, and do your own weathering. If you've never weathered before, you can still do a lot better than that mess.

I have this kit, I bought it when i was a kid, and started to "restore" it. haven't gotten far, but the hood part was bugging me. Wasn't sure what year this truck was or if was old enough where the hood might have been metal. Not an expert on trucks.

If you are a builder, save your money and buy the reissue kit. If you are a collector you may consider buying this kit as I was told that when AMT brought it out, Mack got really upset and it became difficult to get licensing for AMT to do more Mack kits. Back in 1991 AMT released the R Model Mack (red box art truck) and it was pulled from all the Toys R Us stores in Canada and the rumour I heard was that Mack was still upset with the Junkyard dog kit. I did buy one when it was released and was disappointed with the kit. I ended buying a hood and cab and built the kit up like a new truck instead of Junkyard dog. I would only buy another one now if it was dirt cheap so I could use the rest of the kit for a resin conversion.

Wow just looked at a pic of the box art. I think as a novice modeler i could make better "junkyard" parts then that. It don't even look like it has many salvageable parts. That grille guard looks like some welder was high and built it that way. lol. Oh and it is supposed to be a 67 model but don't have the kit so I can't verify.

I thought the Mack R-Series from AMT was a 1975-79.

No. All info says 67. But I am sure it is the late 70s model with a poor refab of a 67.

Amt's r model Mack kit regardless of the issue including the junk yard dog was a 1973 or newer model. Mack had a major dash change for 73 Amts kit has the newer dash. I seem to recall the first issue of Amt's r model was about 1975. The box art shows it in green with Matlack decals and spoke wheels also had square fuel tanks very little chrome. Later issues have aluminum wheels and round tanks more chrome and inaccurate simplified mirrors. Amt certainly blew it with the junk yard dog.
