1320wayne Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 (edited) Here is something slighly outside my comfort zone. It is only my second attempt at building a Rat Rod. This one is coming mainly from the parts box. The body was part of a parts box that I bought at a swap meet a couple of years ago. It had the body and the basic chassis and suspension. The chop job was already done. The body was a rather ugly light blue color with lots of orange peel. I pulled it out the other day and decided to get started on something. I placed the body in the Super Clean tank and left it there for only one day. When I went to rinse it I realized that there were at least four or five old layers of paint underneath and it would have needed more time in the tank but as I rinsed the old paint it started to give me the affect that you see here and I thought that it would make a cool look for a Rat Rod so I left it as it was. I re-shot the roof and visor with flat black. The decals are bomber nose art decals that I purchased on Ebay years ago and have been itching to put some to use. The tires and wheels are alkl from the parts box and the spun aluminum covers on the front are from Detail Master. The interior will be kitbashed and scratchuilt with a bare bones look. The engine that I am using is a Revell 354 Cadillac parts pack engine. I'm not sure of what headers I will use yet. This is a fun project and a nice change of pace from Drag and Nascar kits. John Teresi Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Wayne......looking good........look`s like you can build anything.
Modelmartin Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Sometimes parts box specials are the coolest and most fun models to build and your 27 sedan here is no exception. Very cool!
Sixties Sam Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Wayne, that's looking really cool! All that old paint was a blessing in disguise! I like the effect it made. Nice work - should look good when it's finished. Sam
Modlbldr Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Wayne- I like the way this is turning out and I really like that top chop. Gives it quite a sinister look. Keep at it. Later-

Dr. Cranky Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Yum, Doctor Cranky loves Ratz! Great job on that sloop, swoop--whatever you call that roof slant! Perfect.
Jantrix Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Wayne, looking forward to seeing this come around. Keep at it. She needs a tall engine. A stovebolt 6 I think.
1320wayne Posted March 7, 2011 Author Posted March 7, 2011 Howdy Wayne - I'm not a rat rod person, but I find the top chop interesting and will continue to follow your build. Jim, I hope to have it done to bring to Gainesville for the Billetproof show next month.
crazyjim Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Sounds good Wayne. I look forward to seeing you and your new rat rod. I'm sure the detail you usually do will be included.

pharr7226 Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Nice effect with the paint. This is gonna be a very cool build.
Lunajammer Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 The paint... why can't I have lucky accidents like that?
Jairus Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 (edited) Looks great so far Wayne. Choice of engine can make or break this project. If I can suggest.... the new Hudson Flathead! Ohhhh yeeeaahhhh! Another straight 6 Flathead is the '32 Chrysler or Gangbusters buddy kit, the Lincoln bent-eight. Also, I am not enamored with the super wide rear tires. Big and littles for sure but you should really use vintage wheels and tires too. Those tires will work on an 80's Pro-street 32-roadster but not a Rat. (If this is to be a logical rat rod) Edited March 10, 2011 by Jairus

(If this is to be a logical rat rod) Hey guys, thanks for all of the comments. Jairus, I didn't know there was anything logical about a rat rod. I've seen quite a few that didn't even look roadworthy, intentional or not. I can appreciate what you're saying about the rear tires. They may not be a very traditional or common rat rod look but I liked the look and decided to go with it. The engine is starting to take shape. Like I stated in the first post, I decided to go with the Revell parts pack Caddy 354. The headers are from the parts box and I added aluminum tubing to enhance the look. There is still a ways to go and I also have weathering to add along the way.
Randy D Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Hi Wayne, What a cool stance with that roof line!!! Motor is looking good, nice detail with bluing the headers. Keep up the good work! Randy
Bastardo Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Each time I look at this I fall deeper in love... Great work so far, mate!
