TooOld
You are correct if it had a stock brake system . This one uses two Tilton 5/8" master cylinders mounted above the pedals . A single line goes from one cylinder forward to a tee . Another line goes from the other cylinder , thru the tunnel , to a tee in the rear . You are correct about running the brake line under the steering box . . . That mechanic is no longer employed here ! That said , Thanks for the info on a stock setup . I've never seen one before and was just winging it on this build . I'll be sure to do it correctly on my next one . BOB.
PatW
Hi, up at the crack of dawn around 7.30am! Into the cabin and after a drip of thinners off drops the steering box. Re-site fixing correctly to the top beam and the steering arm like so........... If you see any other blindingly obvious mistakes please don't hesitate to tell me. I think the 1 or 2 grey cells I have left are on the blink!
TooOld
Looks good . Now I have to fix mine . . . it's upside down ! I think I have fewer grey cells than you do !
PatW
Three more pics. I've bought an aftermarket distributor so have wired that in and added the pulleys. the third pic shows the engine canted back so that you can see the colour of the fanshroud................... I've just put the exhaust pipework on so waiting for that to dry. Then I may look at scratchbuilding a muffler or may fit the kit supplied one. TooOld
You're moving right along ! I tend to drag my builds out over a long period . Don't know why . I like the distributor . Where did you get it ?
rmvw guy
Wow! I like this thread. I had'nt checked in since it first started. Good stuff everybody! Edited April 15, 2012 by rmvw guy
PatW
TooOld, the distributor is from an ebay guy in the UK, but you should be able to get them easier in the USA, cause they come from Morgan Automotive Detail (madmodeling.com) Westland Michigan. They have all sizes all colours 4, 6 & 8 cylinder and lots more.
PatW
Just four more pics, I saw the kit muffler to be a bit small and weedy so I scratchbuilt an new road muffler from alloy and plastic tube and some heat bending................ Ans I fitted the seats and grey carpet (did it come with the kit?) and popped the body on to have a look............... See you soon........... TooOld
It's looking good Pat ! I sure like the colors . When you get around to the headlights , drill a small hole in the base and another in the body . Then mount them with a small diameter styrene rod or a pin or something . Sure makes life easier as they can be a real pain to glue on ! BOB.
PatW
Thanks for the tip Bob. Here's today's efforts, firstly fit the body and ensure the new muffler is out of the way..... Fit the fuel tank and rear 'seats' (they don't look too comfortable)...... Edited April 21, 2012 by PatW
PatW
And the last pic for today is...........fit the fuel filler cap....... and I hope to do some more tomorrow after the Bahrain F1 race is over. PatW
Here are some of my last pics on this build. I have painted the five spokes dark matt grey as I like to see American Racing Mags...the later two pics are of the finished model............... And the last three to come............ PatW
These are of the finished kit and some of my other VW aircooled kits......the Empi Imp was a glue bomb and the single seat racer a Scale Equipment Ltd resin kit...... Enjoy!
crazyjim
Very nice builds. Now I really miss my EMPI IMP.
TooOld
I was just wondering today if you had made any progress . It looks great ! You did a nice job . Also , that's a nice collection you have there . With all the excitement about this kit , I'm surprised there aren't more being posted here ! I have two more , but they are down on the list of what I have planned . Keep building and posting your models . BOB.
PatW
Cheers Bob, yes I'm ordering another today, possibly for a turbo Corvair motor and lowered stance! I don't know yet, I'm just about to go through my picture files to see any real ones I'd like to copy. But as VW's (aircooled) go I've got a camper and pickup on the shelf and a Karmann Ghia with a few 911 Porsche's and a 356 on back-order. David G.
There are a whole lot excellent builds here. I'm impressed by the variety of interpretations arising from such a simple kit. Now it's time to add mine to the mix. Minor detail added... I replaced the plastic nerf bars with chrome paperclip wire and reworked the muffler. The decals are from the Revell VW Bus kit. I replaced that horrible rear seat with some "plywood". I've actually seen this done in a couple of 1:1's. Dash detail with one of those wooden steering wheels so popular in the 60's &70's. I still need to add the license plate and figure out some way to clear coat the decals (advise?), but essentially, it's done. Thanks for looking, David G. Edited December 28, 2012 by David G. TooOld
The yellow paint is cool and the Flower power decals are perfect for this kit ! I like your detailing and the contrasting colors . You can clear a finished model by using Pledge Floor Care with Future Shine . Use a small foam brush ( 1 " ) and brush it lightly on the model . It is very thin and as it dries it evens out for a beautiful shine ! I've done this on two older builds and it really turns out nice . Give it a try . BOB. PatW
It's a pity we don't have this Future/Pledge floor shine in the UK, we could make ours look better too!
crazyjim
Very nice looking build David G.
David G.
Bob- thanks for the kind comments and the advise on the Future; I do have some, I just wasn't sure of the best application method. Jim- Thanks! It's SHINY too... and it'll be even more so once I put the future to it! It may take me a while, but there'll be more- and hopefully better pics in the Future. David G. VW Dave
Here's a little 'sneak peek' of the Manx body I painted for George53.....I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with it now The headlights are the smaller ones from any of the Revell '32 Ford street rod kits; they're much nicer than the AMT kit-supplied ones, and they scale out to a nice 7" light....just like the Deitz/Cibie units on my real Manx
george 53
And again, THANKS Dave, it was worth the wait!!!! Folks, the pics DO NOT do the paint on this little gem justice! It IS downright BEAUTIFUL!!!!! :D :D
