Bernard Kron Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 (edited) I haven't built a drag racing car in nearly a year. I've been building nothing but customs and hot rods since last summer. I certainly have missed them! This is actually the third in a series of builds from the AMT Racing Team Special Edition "tin box" double dragster kit. I'm shooting for 4 cars out of a single kit. So far I've built two altereds and this is the first rail. It's pretty straightforward, just the side-by-side small block Chevies but with top mounted blowers. The blowers and injectors are from the AMT '53 Studebaker kit with styrene rings added to the injector stacks for a little more accuracy. The chain drives are from Competition Resins. I scratch built some blower manifolds. These AMT kits kind of build themselves and I'm not departing much from out-of-the-box so it should be a pretty laid back project. I'm waiting for some resin Hilborn injector pumps and mailbox scoops from Altered States before I detail the top side of the motors, but otherwise this should go pretty quickly. Thanx for lookin', B. Raul_Perez Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Look at you go!! And I still haven't had time to BMF the Alfa... The custom intake looks pretty good!! Later, Quote
curt raitz Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Look at you... like minds work together I pulled that kit down last night and will be building the dragster with the twin chevies, but inline purty much gonna be outa-da-box with a little detailing have not figured out color scheme yet will be posting as I go along as well keep-on-building buddy Quote
Scott Colmer Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Looks good Bernard. What color is that chassis? Scott Quote
Bernard Kron Posted April 27, 2011 Author Posted April 27, 2011 Thanx guys! Scott, the chassis paint is Tamiya TS-56 Brilliant Orange. I painted the bodywork and applied the trim and decals. Basic color is Tamiya TS-50 Mica Blue over Duplicolor Gold to create a sort of Candy Blue effect. The gold trim is Pactra trim tape with most of the decals coming from the AMT Double Dragster kit. I'll wait a couple of days and then cover the whole thing in Krylon clear, then finish out the interior surfaces in Testors Metalizer Aluminum Plate. I also received my parts from Altered States Models. I must say I was delighted with the quality and fast service I got. I'm using some small letterbox scoops on the motors and they are incredibly delicate and realistic looking. I'll finish them out in body color but I've included a mockup below. The resin is as thin, fine and clean as I've ever seen from any resin caster with literally no flash. Chuck Meier will be hearing from me again the next time I need some drag racing parts or bodies. Thanx for lookin', B. Quote
Bernard Kron Posted June 14, 2011 Author Posted June 14, 2011 Thanx Raul! I went away for a little vaca. and found on my return that I was building verrrrry sloooowwwllly. But I'm finally moving on this thing. The engine is built, plumbed and wired, glued in place and the chassis and suspension largely completed. In fact I'm pretty close to done. But, as the closeup shots of the wheels will reveal, the car has picked up some, how shall I say, "patina" along the way, so some cleanup and detailing will be in order. Either that or maybe I should add more "patina"? Thanx for lookin', B. Quote

Don't feel bad about building slowly, Bernard...I've been so busy lately with work, graduations, general family "stuff" that I haven't touched any of my models since I polished the paint on the BAT 5 car several weeks ago. My oldest son is visiting until Monday and my youngest one just moved home for the summer with his girlfriend and their dog, so the house is really busy right now. Hopefully I'll get some time in the next couple of weeks to get the BMF on the BAT 5 car and get it finished. I've already made room for it in my display case. Later, Quote
