I'm not sure if there has been one in 1/24 (25) scale or not, but I'm almost certain I've seen one in a military version in 1/35 scale.

Odds are it was a Kübelwagen you saw, and Steve is unfortunately right...comparing the Kübel and Thing is like apples and oranges. To the best of my knowlegde, no kit of the Type 181 'Thing' has been made. A very enterprising modeler converted a Hasegawa Kübel into an off-road Thing, but that's the only one I've seen.

Kinda like comparing a WWII vintage Willys military Jeep to a CJ5 Renegade.

Yep, or like comparing an '08 Model T to a '27 Model T. Totally different monsters, even if they look identical. It would seem to me a no-brainer for someone to kit this (plasic OR resin), I'd be FIRST IN LINE to buy one! (That and a Squareback.)

Well, a friend of mine built this one mostly from scratch. . .

He's a VW freak and everybody here calls him Jimmy Volky. . .

He had this display table at a local show last year. . .
