Testors Chrysler engine red

Recommended Posts

I have a bottle of Testors lacquer Chrysler Engine red and painted it on my 383 but it looks, as the bottle says, red instead of the orange like I see on the 1:1 photos of the 383's. Is this the right color for the engine? I can't find any paints at the LHS that are listed as Chrysler engine ORANGE, so I would think this is the color. But it doesn't look right.

I didn't want to buy a spray can of Hemi Orange for $6.99, but it looked like a closer color. What do you think?

Tom, I'm not sure on the red, but you couldn't go wrong with the Hemi Orange in the spray can. I used it on the body and engine of my 09 Challenger, and without the clear it looks pretty good in my opinion on the engine.

I don't have a pic of the front half of the interior and body together, but I also used no clear on the inner fender area, and it does give a differt look compared to the clearcoated body.

Hope this helps. :D

I have to presume that you are going by the kit painting instructions that call for Chrysler Engine Red and I have to tell you that the instructions are wrong. If you want to stick to hobby paints, use Model Master International Orange for street Hemis as it is very close. I use actual Mopar engine enamel for my Mopar model engines and those paints are available from Summit Racing. A full can should cost you about $9.00 without shipping. Don't bother going to a Dodge dealership as they do not carry the paint and are very relunctant to order it for you.

Yes, the Chrysler Engine Red is too red. Use Hemi Orange as it's much closer to the real orange color IMHO. I haven't purchased any on a while, but AutoZone, Advance Auto, etc. had the engine colored spray paints in 12 oz cans for $6.99 or so, and a can of that will last forty Mopar model engines or so. ;)

Remember, the non-HP engines were turquoise or red. High-performance engines were orange.

Working off a Yahoo! model builder's group, I helped edit and clean-up a Big Three & AMC engine color guide. I'll be happy to e-Mail you a copy if you'd like one.

I can't promise this is 100% right, but it's the best I could do with the information I had.

Below is what I have come up with as a good start to find the correct engine color for Mopar engines from 1960 to 1973. After about 1969 they were all pretty much Blue except for a few odd balls. I have seen Slant sixes in Black in the early 60's sales brochures but those are not the best source. I have used information from the Plymouth Owner's club, Walter P. Chrysler Club and various web sites to assemble this list. Engine colors were and still are subject of much debate. It seems no one at the factory really cared about any kind of specification for paint - as long as it got painted - it was ok. These are what I have found to be considered normal or standard - if there is such a thing. Your comments are welcome - however be prepared to back up your arguments with facts from somewhere. I would hope this will be a help to those who are trying to restore their classic Mopar to as near original as possible.

The paint numbers are from Mopar Performance and may or may not be available from your local dealer.

Mike- I'm not worried about the kit instructions. I am matching a 1:1 car. I was just using the paint I had on hand and noticed that it wasn't as orange as the engine in the photo. Next, I was surprised to find that there was not any Chrysler Hemi orange bottle paint at the hobby store. I just wondered if the red was what others used or if the hobby shop just didn't carry any H.O. and I needed to buy some spray.

I did see the International orange and almost bought it. I guess that's what I'll go with.

Mr Superbee- Thanks for the VERY DETAILED info. I'll be keeping that list for future reference.

Now, does anybody have any photos of a 383 engine and tranny OUT of a vehicle? Preferably up close, detail shots.

Later-
