HondaRacer1124 Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Hello all, With Tamiya primer hard to find at this time I was hoping for some insight on this. Looking to airbrush with Tamiya paints and clear. Has anybody used them over PlasticCote or Mr Hobby Surfacer 1000? Also any opinions on the Mr Hobby Surfacer 1000? Seen that a couple people in Scale Auto use it. Thanks for any thoughts
Alyn Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Just finished up a 32 Sedan with PlastiKote gray primer, top coated with Tamiya spray can purple and white plus Tamiya clear. Turned out great. I was using Tamiya gray primer, but switched to the PlastiKote and really like it. My last 3 or 4 have been done with the Plastikote/Tamiy a combo. No problems for so far.
Agent G Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 If thinned correctly for airbrushing, Mr. Surfacer makes an excellant primer. I've painted over Mr Surfacer with all sorts of laquer, enamel, and acrylic and not had an issue. I swear it is Plastikote in a jar. G
Longbox55 Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Duplicolor primer is another good choice. It works very well with both Tamiya and Testors laquers.
ffreak Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 Plasticote is my primer of choice for ANY paint. I've never had a compatability problem with it of any kind. However, I can't find it anymore and had to switch to Tamiya, which can't be found once again. I'm lucky enough I had stocked up on Tamiya primer and have been using it all this time. Hopefully it'll be out again soon. My son tried Duplicolor with very bad results though. I haven't figured out yet what went wrong on that deal but i'm sorta afraid to try it myself now.
