crowe-t Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 (edited) I've seen a few different orange colors used for General Lee builds. What's considered to be the closest color/paint to use? Edited August 13, 2011 by crowe-t
MoparWoman Jamie Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 Look on page 2 in the general area here for a thread "Calling all General Lee Fans - revised" . You should find your info there that you seek. EV2 is the correct color that was used on the GA cars. It also depends what color primer you got with as well before adding the orange. The primer can change the orange color big time.
crowe-t Posted August 13, 2011 Author Posted August 13, 2011 Thanks Jim for the info! I think I should have asked about a hobby paint/color to use. Does anyone have suggestions?
disabled modeler Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 I thought it was Competition Orange????
MoparWoman Jamie Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 I thought it was Competition Orange???? There is now really afew colors in the hobby world that will work for the General Lee paint color. There is Hemi Orange (Two part stage), Competition Orange, and Racing Orange (if I recall that is the name of the paint).
Longbox55 Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 (edited) If you're replicating one from the original show, the correct color is GM code 70 Flame Red, a '75 Corvette color, Lee 1, 2, and 3 were this color. The Georgia cars after Lee 3 were Hemi Orange, but after production moved to California, they went back to Flame Red. Lee 1 had the Flame Red aplied directly over the factory T3 Light Bronze Metallic, later cars used a basecoat to prevent the blochiness and to get a consistant color. crowe-t Posted August 13, 2011 Author Posted August 13, 2011 I was looking at the Testors spray lacquers. Testors Model Master Hemi Orange is a metallic paint but the color(in pictures) looks good. Testors Competition Orange is enamel. Though I'd rather use lacquer. Maybe I'll just go with the Testors Hemi Orange. I'm just not sure how noticeable the metallic is?!
Danno Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 Or, you could just paint it purple and insist there actually was a purple one slightly visible in the background of a scene in episode #whatever, and besides, everybody should get over it, because you're just building it for yourself and you don't care if it's right or wrong because you're still building the most accurate GL replica ever ... (Several emoticons indicating LOL here.) (Emoticon indicating OMGNAGLT! here.) (Emoticon indicating 'Americans have got to learn to take a joke' here.)
crowe-t Posted August 13, 2011 Author Posted August 13, 2011 Danno, I don't know how accurate I'll be building it. I just want it to look nicer then my old MPC kit.
pack rat Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 The built-up pictured on the top of the Round2 1/16 GL box, and the 1/25 built-up on the website were painted Testors Model Master "Huggar" Orange lacquer over Tamiya white primer. I did alot of research when building the 1/25 version. Apparently they used several shades of orange through the show's run, including Hugger Orange which I felt had the "right" look .

That's funny, I just e-mailed Round 2 last night asking what color was used on the 1/25 General Lee that's shown on the site. BTW, is Hugger Orange a metallic paint? I'm still on the fence using Hemi Orange since it's metallic.
pack rat Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 Hugger Orange is non-metallic. I briefly considered Hemi Orange but just didn't think it looked right compared to any General Lee photos.
crowe-t Posted August 13, 2011 Author Posted August 13, 2011 Mike, Did you use Hugger Orange on a General Lee yet? For some reason I'm thinking Hugger Orange might look too Orange.
pack rat Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 Yes, I did...on the Round2 built-ups. Sorry, I didn't really explain on my original post...I've done a bunch of box-art and display kits for them including the two General Lees.

Drake69 Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 I've been following your build thread! Beautiful job. Thanks! Actually, it's not "complete" just yet. Still waiting on a pushbar, CD antenna, and a surprise!
Green Duster Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 I've just used Testors Comp. orange. Looks close
charlie8575 Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 Orange you a smart guy, Mike? Charlie Larkin
Rick Schmidt Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 Mike that is not the correct shade of orange.... Anyone who is knowledgeable in General Less will see that and tell you so !! Me on the other hand I think that looks close enough.
Chuck Most Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 Mike that is not the correct shade of orange.... Anyone who is knowledgeable in General Less will see that and tell you so !! Me on the other hand I think that looks close enough. Check the color settings on your monitor before you make such a bold claim, Mr. Man!
Chuck Most Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 Where'd you get a color monitor? I always thought the General Lee was Grey.... I moved out of Kansas, found myself in Oz... boom, here we are, color montior!
