crazyjim Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 Has anyone ever used Turtle Wax polishing compound on a model car? You know, after using one of those polishing kits with the real fine sandpaper? I've been using Novus #2 and it works pretty well, but I found a new can of the Turtle Wax in the garage and was thinking about using it. I don't know how to run a comparison. How do you measure the grittiness? In microns? I'll try looking or emailing Turtle Wax and Novus if that's what it takes. And remember - it's Friday and you know what that means. Pool, pizza, popcorn, and WWE Friday night Smackdown. Hope you all have a great evening.
Longbox55 Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 I use it, works pretty good. I've taken blush out of Duplicolor with it without doing any sanding, brought the shine out right away.
crazyjim Posted September 23, 2011 Author Posted September 23, 2011 Really? That's interesting. I've sent emails off to Novus & Turtle Wax trying to get an answer about the grit of each. The Turtle Wax is significantly cheaper than Novus.
Longbox55 Posted September 24, 2011 Posted September 24, 2011 I use the liquid, I find it a bit easier to work with than the paste. I keep both the rubbing compound (coarser grit) and the polishing compound (fine) on hand.
Tonioseven Posted September 24, 2011 Posted September 24, 2011 Could you post a picture of the item (s) in question?
crazyjim Posted September 24, 2011 Author Posted September 24, 2011 Turtle Wax polishing compound. It comes in a round, white plastic container. The actual compound is white.
Longbox55 Posted September 24, 2011 Posted September 24, 2011 If you have the white compound, it's the finer of the 2. There is also a rubbng compound paste in a similar can that's more agressive. It is a reddish color, about the same color as red oxide primer, and the can has a red label on it. It is also a dryer compund that the white version.
SuperStockAndy Posted September 24, 2011 Posted September 24, 2011 I use the red stuff and it works fine.
crazyjim Posted September 24, 2011 Author Posted September 24, 2011 I know the difference between rubbing & polishing compounds, Bill. I'm wondering the difference between TW polishing compound and Novus #2.
LoneWolf15 Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 Jim , I would say that the Turtle Wax would be more abrasive than the Novus 2 from past experience . I know for a fact that it will chew an enamel paint job up in half a heartbeat . The Novus 2 , on the otherhand , is great with the enamels. Donn Yost
crazyjim Posted September 25, 2011 Author Posted September 25, 2011 Thanks, Donn. If/when I get an answer from Novus & Turtle Wax, I'll be sure to post it here. By the way Donn, somebody was asking about the Paasche H series, single action airbrush. I told him it's recommended by you.
crazyjim Posted September 26, 2011 Author Posted September 26, 2011 Well Turtle Wax bummed me out. I talked with 3 different people and none of them could find the grit of their polishing compound. Novus on the other hand was terrific. Novus #2 is 1200 grit and Novus #3 is 600 grit.
Tonioseven Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 I'll get a container and try it out; I RARELY use enamels but I'll find a use for it. Paasche H: I LOVE mine!! I'm thinking about getting another one!!
