I need to find a detailed Chevy 350 V8 for my brother's '80 Monte Carlo that I'm building. I haven't seen pics of the actual engine yet but he modified it with high performance parts (not sure exactly what, but he said he spent about $1,000 and this was back in the '80s lol). I would also like to get some aftermarket 1/25 parts for the engine, so that it's dressed up like it would have been on the real car. I really would love to find real metal parts, or something really detailed like a Ross Gibson engine but the only 350 offered is the "ROADent 350 TPI" and I don't think it is modified the same way. Anyone know of any aftermarket engines or even accessory parts for a 350 Chevy? Any tips/info will be extremely appreciated, I am going all out on this build so the more detailed the better. :)

I want to make something similar to this:

The Revell '69 Nova has a 350,but it also has two big holes in the block and some other issues.

Can you elaborate on the holes in the block (pics?) and the other "issues"? I read several other reviews of this kit and followed Len Carsner's build-up on this site, and other than the technical glitch of putting a 1970-LT-1 engine in a 1969 model, I don't recall any of this. Are you perhaps thinking of the axle holes in AMT's 350 block?

The engine in AMT's 66 Nova kit is nice. The thing your gonna find maybe hard to come by is the valve covers. They might be available in some nascar chevy car/truck kits. but other than that, you just need a basic small block chevy. :)

Any small block Chevy from any kit will work for a 350. They all have the same dimensions on the outside,so no one could ever tell the difference in scale. To come up with the basic block and a nice set of headers, get the 302 out of the Revell '69 Z/28. If you feel you have to have a 350,use the one in the AMT '70 1/2 Camaro. The Revell '69 Nova has a 350,but it also has two big holes in the block and some other issues. If you need a TH400 transmission, the AMT '57 Corvette street machine has a nice one.

What "Holes" in the block on the Revell 69 Nova Kit? If you are referring to metal axle pass throughs, there aren't any on the Revell kit. Please elaborate!

It's a little pricey but it will work perfectly. Or if I went with a plastic engine I can get these too:

I may have a smallblock Chevy in my parts box somewhere, but I want it to be extra detailed and special so I will probably be getting the Scale Repro's 350 engine kit. :D

I have both these in my stash & I can tell you the Scale Repros 350 is nice, but mine has a few casting issues that will easily be rectified with a little bit of bondo. That is as long as you want to paint the engine of course. The air filter is a little tacky, but can be used with some detailing. The milled aluminium parts are nice though. As the 350 is a solid lump of metal, it also has a considerable weight factor (for its size), so the front suspension had better be up to scratch. The PE Chevy dress up kit is nothing short of spectacular   & would be my choice. That air cleaner is a 10/10 on its own, & I seriously wished they made the same kit for a Big Block Chrysler as well (I'd buy 10 straight up). It would also be possible to file the top of the SR 350 valve covers flat & use the PE parts on it..... If you're going to paint the engine, why not mate the resin heads to the cast metal block & use both to make one very nice display?

you wouldn't want to get rid of them by any chance would you LOL? I do plan on painting the engine, it will be Chevy engine blue. I did expect some cleanup with the parts so luckily I have some Bondo spot putty that should work. I will be adding a fair amount of detail so more than likely the front suspension's plastic will be getting replaced or reinforced with either metal tubing or added styrene. I'm still waiting to receive the Monte Carlo kit I bought, can't wait to dig into it. This engine is gonna cost more than what I paid for the kit shipped but it will be worth it :) I will have to hunt down some more parts, it will be getting a lot of photo etched detail too.

Michelle, that was an R&D Unique engine casting in white metal. It's about 20 years old, and R&D has been gone for about 5/6 years now. E-Bay is the ONLY way you'll find one, unless somebody trades one off.

SERIOUSLY though Michelle, seeing how you're painting it Chevy blue, if you had access to a plastic 350 block, the Model Car Garage photo etched dress up kit for the Chev is definately the way to go. The only down-side is that you don't get the machined aluminium parts, but let's face it, they're all available seperately from Scale Dreams anyway. http://stores.scaledreams.com/StoreFront.bok. All the machined stuff you really get with the Scale Repros Plus 350 is the air cleaner (the MCG one is nicer anyway), a few pulleys, alternator, distributor, some wires, & that's about it. I will add here that I am not in any way affiliated with Scale Dreams or the MCG, BUT I will give credit where credit's due. Those M/T valve covers & air cleaner are pure eye candy & worth every cent.....

Before you invest too much in parts, I'd ask to see pictures of the real engine; the first step in building an accurate replica is always research.

IMO the Revellogram '37 Ford kits came with a good starting point for a SBC build.

I have... this is a car that he had in the '80s that he doesn't currently own or have many pictures of. I asked if he had any pics of the interior or engine and since he didn't post any on Facebook, I am going to assume that he doesn't have any since he described some details to me in messages. I asked him if he had put the typical '80s style chrome dress up & performance stuff on it and he said yes, about $1,000 worth lol. So I'm thinking billet air cleaner, finned valve covers, braided stainless hoses, etc...... I'm sure you know what I mean ;) I'm not going to count rivets as I know it will never be entered in a show, it will sit on a shelf somewhere in his house in a display case/small diorama I'm making for it. I just wanted to add detail to it, and metal parts is a nice addition. Due to the cost of the Scale Repro's engine kit (there is no way I'm spending nearly $40 on that) I will be getting the M/T dress up kit unless I can find one that says "350" like the picture I posted above. Besides the engine I had planned on opening the trunk and doors, but I need to get this done by Christmas so I'm not sure if I'll get everything I planned to do to it finished :)

OOPS.... My link to Scale Dreams didn't work, but they are there if you google them...

OMG this is one of the reasons I love this place, Scale Dreams is a gold mine :D Thank you, I see a ton of stuff I could order lol.

Does anybody have pics of the "stock" engine from Len Carsner's board build? (I found the thread, but it looks like all the pictures have expired). I doubt if I'll ever buy the kit, but I'd like to see the engine so I can determine if the flaws plowboy mentioned are something I can fix.

I have a bunch of metal engine parts from model part specialties if your interested in trading I can post some pics here for you to look at.

are they for a small block chevy? I would definitely be interested in a trade, sure. I don't have many parts but I'm more than happy to trade a kit or kits for what you have, I know this stuff can add up cost wise so I will make sure it's a fair trade. I'm also interested in door hinge kits, interior & engine photoetched detail sets, etc.

 wow lol. Let me know in a PM what you might be interested in trade wise for these parts:

intake, headers, timing cover, starter, cylinder heads, "350" valve covers, fan, and possibly the Muncie 4 speed & bellhousing (I need to find out what tranny the Monte Carlo had).

I am still interested in finding these metal SBC parts from Model Parts Specialties:

intake, headers, cylinder heads, "350" valve covers, and fan.

Please keep in mind I don't own a hobby shop full of rare and vintage kits so if you have some metal SBC parts to trade I am willing to buy outright or trade + $$ too, so that it's an equal value trade. Thanks
