Austin T Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 My local hobby shop has had the little ounce bottle of paint on back order since May so I picked up some spray paint from Tamiya.Any tips or tricks to it?I know that warm water helps spray paint. Thanks,Austin
Austin T Posted December 3, 2011 Author Posted December 3, 2011 (edited) Holy cow,I think that might be the best first coat of paint iv'e ever done! Edited December 3, 2011 by Austin T
jbwelda Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 indeed...i was going to say: tips? warm the can in warm water, spray and be amazed. a couple of colors work better than others but other than that its all gravy. the clear isnt really a "wet look" clear though, if you want wet look use model master gloss coat, it wont hurt the tamiya if you spray a light coat or two first.
maltsr Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 I use Tamiya a lot and agree that warming the can helps. I pop the can into a jug of hot water while setting up the parts for spraying, then shake the can well for 30 seconds or so. I usually spray a few light mist coats from about 10 inches away, these dry very quickly, and then a wet coat. Move in closer for the wet coat, I get as close as about 6 inches and move the can quickly to avoid runs. Watch the paint build up and become smooth. Leave for 10 minutes then another wet coat. Same routine for the Tamiya clear, but I usually wait a couple of days after applying the colour before light sanding and clearcoating. Be aware that the wet coats may tend to pull the paint away from door edges and panel lines Some colours seem to lay down really nice as jbwelda says, the solid reds, dark metallic blue are easy to use. As always, practice and don't get disheartened. Once you find the Goldilocks zone for the wet coats, all is sweet - not too wet (runs) and not too dry (orange peel) My recent build of the Speedwagon required virtually no sanding or polishing but this took years of practice and self denial .

Austin T Posted December 4, 2011 Author Posted December 4, 2011 Thanks guys, The paint turned out nice and all I have left is coat two.I will post pics of the finished product soon in under the glass,It's a 1993 Ford Ranger splash. It's not what grabs you eye right off the bat,but it is a nice kit.
maltsr Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Looking forward to seeing it Austin. Just take your time (don't ask how I know that!)
tabsscale1 Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 I justthrow mine away tried 6 different colors and same results from every one. I would rather use Testors enamel paints before i buy another can of Tamiya paint!

RodneyBad Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 (edited) If it wasn't for Tamiya Rattle can paints, I'd quite building all together.. After some mold seams sanding. Following some painting advice from THG. light coat (wait 15mins) med coat (wait 15 min) Med coat (wait 15min) heavier Coat (wait 15 min) Heavy Coat (wait 15 min) Ditto with the Clear. To add to that, I suck at painting and I'm Perty Dang happy.. Now I just got to finish them off. Edited December 4, 2011 by RodneyBad
