For my next build I'm going to build the 7/ Eleven Mustang GTO

History

The Brilliant red, white and blue 7/Eleven mustang is one of the hottest machines that ever ran in road racing. Piloted by Bruce Jenner. this sleek pony was a challenger for the checkered flag every time it appeared in competition. Teamed with Scott Pruett, Jenner scored his first victory by winning the 1986 GTO class at the Coca-cola 12 hours of Sebring. He won the Norelco drivers cup for outstanding performance at the Los Angeles Times Grand Prix in California and teamed with Pruett at Elkhart Lake Road America to win the GTO class. Man this is one "winning machine!"

The powerful 7/Eleven Ford Mustang built and campaigned by Rousch Racing is constructed on a tubular chassis that was designed for strength and light weight. The IMS regulations required the use of the production windshield and the steel roof panel but the balance of the bodywork is a special structure of fiberglass with honeycomb reinforcement. All of these panels can be removed easily to provide accessibility for maintenance or to replace panels damaged in the heat of competition. The fenders were specially contoured to handle the wide Goodyear racing tires.

the 7/Eleven Mustang weighed 2,600 pounds as specified by the class regulations and it was powered by a competition prepared Ford SVO V8 motor equipped with aluminum heads and coupled to a 5 speed transmission. This potent power-plant was prepared by Roush Racing and produced an excess of 600HP. On high-speed tracks like the high-banked Daytona international Speedway the 7/eleven Mustang could exceed 200 miles per hour.

The Kit

I got this rather cheap off EvilBay. It was already started but I didn't think it was anything I couldn't undo if I needed to.

This is going to be an interesting build. I started this kit when it first came out, but somehow it got put on the back burner when I thought about masking up the body for the dark blue. I got sidetracked into something else and never did finish it. Now I'll have to dig out the box and see how much I actually completed.

So I'm going to be following along with your build in hopes of getting inspiration to finish mine!

Looking forward to seeing this built. I built a few....many converted to other cars. I still want to build this one too.

I used that kit to bash this version of Roush's IMSA Cougar.

I had this kit about 10 years or so ago and remember starting it. For the life of me I can't remember what ever happened to it. Those were the dark days of marriage.

Dig it out and join me for a side by side build. The same thing happened with my 68 Cobra Jet on another site. I find building like that is helpful.

I would Dirk...... but I've got about ten others on the go plus two dioramas at the moment, and I made a (pre) New Year reso to get something finished! I daren't start another one.......

But I'll be following yours.

Dirk.....never finished a Mustang yet!! Used the kit a number of times to build other cars!

Also....beware of the Folgers kit. The first run had BAD decals. They had two issues. No white undercoat so they just fadded away on the deep red.....and that was if you got them on to the car as they had a clear on them that was very brittle.

What a better way to start the 7/ Eleven Mustang build then with a hot cup of 7/ Eleven coffee? Mmmm now I'm ready to maul some plastic.

The 600+HP Rouche motor. The directions called out for the motor to be painted silver. To be honest I couldn't find anything that proved or disproved that and since I like the Ford Blue better I went with that instead. I just like it better :102:

I seriously thought about pluming the fire estinguisher (Red Bottle) but photos of these cars have been hard for me to find let alone photos on the interior. I'd have no idea where to run the tubing to.

The top of the body also got a shot of white

Thanks for taking the time to look at my work

oha...i remember my childhood, when i bought the first issue of this kit. It looks terrible when i built it and, long time ago, i sold it. :(

Big mistake, i think now. If i had the knowledge that time, i kept an eye of him and restored it. But this happened...

So, i take a look over your shoulder and what i see till this point - great! It will come out very pretty i think. Go on! I am watching ;) and thanks for memorys

thanks Jason

Not much to show today. Last night I gave the body a second cote of white paint ( I HATE WHITE PAINT). I spent the rest of the evening painting and assembling all kinds of bits and bobs and hoses. Lots of tedious stuff. Hopefully by the time I'm done with all that the body will be ready to be handled. I hate working with white paint!

Built the wheels and mocked them up on the chassis. I'll need to sand them down a bit to get rid of the seam line and make them look like they've been driven on.

IMG_0913.jpg

I think all of the rear plumbing is completed except for the fuel tank filler. When I dry fitted the body and the rear hatch it didn't match up correctly so I removed it for now. I hope I don't lose the darn thing.

IMG_0914.jpg

I drilled out the exhaust pipes

IMG_0915.jpg

I then made the harness for the drivers seat using some tamiya tape. I don't have a clue what they looked like for this particular car and none of the kits I found on line made any seat belts so I'm free balling it. So all you rivet counters go easy.

Thanks for looking.

Well after over two years sitting on the shelf I decided to blow off the dust and try and finish this bad a*$ pony. I stalled on this build when it came time to mask off the car for the second color. For whatever reason I couldn't get the masking correct which caused me to loose interest. The other week I was sitting in a Google + Hangout and picked it up and started masking. I found the masking to be a bit challenging due to the contour of the body.

Here is the second color that will be going on. Model Masters Dark Blue

Next it was time for the decals. After doing some SciFi builds I felt I was ready to handle these decals but I was wrong. When I placed the decals in the water and went to remove them from the backing a collection of glue SNOT collected and was visible through the decals. They also curled like crazy. What I ended up doing was setting up my Micro Sol brush and dragging the decals across it to remove the snot. Then I applied the decals to the car. Not an easy task for a two armed person.

The contours of the body also proved to be a bit challenging as they were with the masking.

IMG_20140605_173519_520_zpsbaba5a13.jpg

So far only one casualty. I did my best to fix it with some paint.

This one should be finished soon.

Thanks for looking
