Well I figured I would show how I make cowl hoods for my projects, This is by no means the only way to do this but it usually works out well for me.

What you will need:

.040 sheet styrene

Ruler

Hobby knife with sharp blade (scissors will also work)

Half Round styrene strips.

Here is the hood that will recieve the scoop

Start by marking the center line of the hood and where you want the edges of the scoop to be with a pencil or sharpie

Now cut out the area in between the outer lines (this will be the opening under the scoop)

Now measure the length of the hood and figure out how tall you want the scoop to be, and cut the side profile of the scoop out of sheet styrene twice (one for each side)

Next glue these pieces to the outside of the hole in the hood.

After that is dry, cut a piece of styrene to fill in the space between the sides of the scoop.

At this point you could fill in the gap in the front and have a smooth scoop or you could use some half round strips to make a body line down the middle like I did here

Then use your favorite filler to clean up the edges and you can prime and paint it

Hope this helps, let me know if anything doesn't make sense......Billy

Here are a few other hoods I did using this technique

Thanks for doing this, I'm going to build a cowl hood for a '70 Camaro too

Glad I could help!

Very nice tutorial, thanks! I've been thinking about building cowl hood, and this proves, it can be done. Needs to build at least one cowl hood for Fox Mustang...

I've been wondering about those hoods. Thanks.

Would it/could it work if you made just the side cuts, raised the center piece, and then make the side panels? Probably have to lengthen the rear edge though. Just wondering.

I have heard of it being done that way, but every time I try it I end up breaking the center piece off because I bend it too fast :P
