Joe Handley Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 That paint is fantastic so far, probably far better than they ever left the factory with!
Shelbytona Posted March 18, 2012 Author Posted March 18, 2012 (edited) Thanks guys! I lightly wet sanded the body and polished it and it's like glass! I decided to paint the window trim a semi gloss... this is harder to do then BMF! i don't wanna use a brush, so i'll mask off every window frame and paint it, same goes for door handles and belt moulding. Joe Handley Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Did you use Semigloss Black or Semigloss Clear over the existing Black?
Wheels Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 It's great to see these kits getting built! Love the detail your putting into this one!! I owned an '85 Daytona in Gunmetal Blue I loved that car as much as my '82 Omni 024. I look forward to your progress Here's an '85 that I'm building as a slammer. Hosted on Fotki and here's an '88 Hosted on Fotki
Shelbytona Posted March 19, 2012 Author Posted March 19, 2012 Those Daytona's look great! There's a few pro street Daytona's here at the local track. Is that your omni 024 in your profile pic? I got the trim pieces all painted on the body... a ton of masking! I blacked out both grill inserts just like a 1:1 car would have. Tamiya Semi-gloss acrylic sprayed thru my airbrush.
Shelbytona Posted March 19, 2012 Author Posted March 19, 2012 Thanks! I just finished the red pinstripe, now it looks complete!
Joe Handley Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Wow, I take it you masked and painted that stripe?
Shelbytona Posted March 19, 2012 Author Posted March 19, 2012 Wow, I take it you masked and painted that stripe? Its actually tomato red automotive pinstripe, i just cut it really thin and it worked out perfect! it sticks great too!
Joe Handley Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Ah, cool! Looks about dead on for the stripe on the '88 Shadow ES Turbo I also used to own!
Shelbytona Posted March 19, 2012 Author Posted March 19, 2012 haha yeah that tomato red is the colour they used... well the daytona for sure! Here's how well the rear window louvers fit on the daytona.
kruleworld Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 nice black paint job. makes it look like a baby knight rider. pinstriping with pinstriping, good idea.

I wish it was but no, That is Ronnie Sox's Sox & Martin Omni 024. Very cool! I loved those blue headlights! Years ago, I ran my little '82 Omni 024 2.2L at the race track for fun at my friends urging because even with their Chevelles Camaros and Mustangs. None of them could beat me off the line in a race. That always ticked them off! LOL! They always beat me on top end of course. At the track that day there was a '80 Omni sporting the same color as my car which was cool! I have a photo somewhere. He was running a tube chassis car with a 440 under the hood! By the way, here is a photo of my 024 that I'm working on. Hosted on Fotki I love the progress on your Daytona! Love the look with the red stripe. Edited March 19, 2012 by Wheels
Scuderia Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 nice start, mark i like that color. And this tomato red just pops on the black. That looks mean, in a good way
tyrone Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Hella skills you have there.... it's shaping up to be another home run....
Shelbytona Posted March 20, 2012 Author Posted March 20, 2012 (edited) Thanks guys! That Omni is looking great!! I'd like to see some pics of it when its finished. I got the front window in with a lot of fight... prepare for a lot of sanding on the bottom of the glass if you want the hood sitting flat. The rear glass is glued in and i got the rear louvers painted. Edited March 20, 2012 by Shelbytona
Joe Handley Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Can't wait to see this one finished, nice touch on the blue windshield tint too BTW!
gray07 Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 This is a sweet build, i just did a trade on here for one of these cars and they cut the hatch opened now it is hidged, i had to have it, it needs finished but it is cool.
Shelbytona Posted March 22, 2012 Author Posted March 22, 2012 (edited) Thanks guys, it's slowly coming along! That's awesome, what style are you going to build? I got the tail lights finished. I got some Tamiya smoke and painted it on the top and bottom part of the tail lights (the tail lights on a 1:1 car are this way) then i put BMF on the back side to make them look reflective, it turned out pretty good i think! I also got the chassis painted, once it's dry i'll start detailing it up. Not a fan of the rough texture on the chassis.. Edited March 22, 2012 by Shelbytona
Scuderia Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 it's coming along perfect though so far. Making me want to pick up one of these!
Shelbytona Posted March 22, 2012 Author Posted March 22, 2012 it's coming along perfect though so far. Making me want to pick up one of these! Thanks! You should pick one up, it be neat to see more of these built, the details and pieces are very nice, the only fitment issue on this kit so far, was the front window. got some details done under the hood.
martinfan5 Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 You are doing a great job, beautiful paint job, nice and shiny, like glass. This is making want to pick up one the kits, but the 84-85 model year I think. I remember when I was a teen, my mom had one of these, not this year though. How did you use the Tamiya paint?, from the can or A/B?
