Hello, I am starting to build small individual wooden displays for my models. I am trying to use colors that are common to the automobile manufacturer and period of the car. Can someone recommend an on line paint source? I need to be able to buy high gloss paints in small amounts. Thank you.

You can use just about any automotive paint on wood; in fact, most furniture restoration shops and cabinetmakers (even custom furniture builders) still use clear acrylic lacquers on wood for a finish. No need to go online, check your closest auto supply store or auto supply department for colors.

I've used automotive paints on wooden parts I've made for model cars numerous times. I would suggest a good sealer for the wood, needs to be lacquer-based, of course, as most touchup paints in spray cans are still a lacquer base. If you have a good hobby shop nearby, check and see if they have Aero Gloss Dope (the old fashioned paint for tissue or fabric covered model airplanes). Aero Gloss makes a "sanding sealer" that can be used to seal the wood, harden up the surface so it can be sanded smooth, leaving no fibers of the grain sticking up. MinWax also has this same basic kind of sealer as well.

I would caution against using minwax as a sealer for any lacquer based finish. I'm a woodworker and I've seen the poor performance of minwax products. Minwax contains stearates that will react badly with lacquer.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my posting. I am in a very rural area with no hobby shops around, that is why I asked for an on line source for paint. Any recommendations? Thanks again.

Notice that I mentioned both Minwax (which is sold not only in craft stores, but a number of chain stores sell this product as well), and automotive touchup paints (Duplicolor, Plastikote and the like, which are sold in auto supply stores, and in the auto supplies sections of places such as Walmart).

Thanks again for your reply. Are there not any companies on line that sell paints in small amounts for our hobby with a larger selection of colors than Walmart? Our Walmart has little to no paint as do local auto supply stores. Thank you.

NDC,

I don't know if you have an airbrush or not, but Scale Finishes has many automotive colors and supplies them in small quantities. Jameston the owner, is GREAT to work with, his product and prices are great, and can get just about any color mixed. Like Art said, Duplicolor automotive spray paints are great. TCP Global is an on-line supplier of automotive finishing products that carries Duplicolor. HTH.
