Nick Winter Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Just wondering how long is long enough and any tips I can get about using Super Clean for paint stripping. Thank You. Nick
Pete J. Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Till they are done! Seriously, use a toothbrush and give them a scrub after overnight and it all the paint doesn't come off, back in. The answer to this really depands on the type and brand of paint. There is no specific answer.
Nick Winter Posted July 28, 2012 Author Posted July 28, 2012 Pete Thank You, I left them over night an wondered if I should/could give them a try today or if I should wait, I will give them a scrub and see what happens. Nick
george 53 Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Nick, WHATEVER you do, WEAR GLOVES!!!! that is some NASTY stuff, Nick, and it WILL eat the skin on your hands! Use gloves EVERYTIME you mess with this stuff. I wouldn't lie to you.
Mike Kucaba Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Don't forget that most of the paint strippers like SC work better when warm.
Nick Winter Posted July 28, 2012 Author Posted July 28, 2012 Warm and Gloves, Thank You Guys very important tips. Nick
Danno Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 And ... when out of the purple pond (which these days is more red than purple) give it a nice thorough wash with Dawn dish soap and water, then rinse thoroughly and set the parts out on several thicknesses of paper towels so the moisture will wick off and the parts air dry thoroughly. I use a plastic container (various sizes, just a enough bigger than the parts) for my purple pond and purple pondettes. Then I use plastic spoons* to fish out the parts (or small plastic salad/hor d'ourve tongs for bodies). That way, I have minimal contact with the purpleness. Much less skin damage. * I drill three or four very small holes in the spoon so as to better drain off the excess purpl-osity. Easier to handle tiny parts, scoop 'em up, and still not have the purple death splashing all over the workbench, etc. Super Clean (and its cheaper alter-ego, Purple Power) is wonderful stuff. It's all I use. Much safer than oven cleaner and no oily residue like brake fluid. And, it's much faster and cleaner than either of them. With the added bonus that it's biodegradable, so it goes right down the old drain. (Not recommended for toilets ... it'll damage the wax ring.) PS- I've heard ... but haven't yet tried ... that it strips even better if you play David Rose's 1960's hit record "The Stripper" in the background while it's working! 0h, wait ... I heard that on April 1.
Nick Winter Posted July 28, 2012 Author Posted July 28, 2012 Thank you very much Dan, I like the idea of the spoons, I will try that for sure. I will also wash the body and its parts down in dawn soap. I have just pulled out my AMT '76 Mustang II and well I'll let the photo's do the talking. Really do appreciate the help everyone. Nick
jamesG Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 I had two old (20 years) lamborghini models the paint was very hard to get off (can't remember what kind) after a week in csc 95% of the paint was gone but when I tried to wash them they were so britle they just abuot shattered in my hand. could this have been caused by the castrol or was it just old age, or a combo of the two?
crazyjim Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 I forgot to put on the gloves that are right there by the sink. That was Wednesday. The last couple of days my skin has been flaking off. Nasty stuff.
