Just saying ', most guys plan on painting their kits, & we all know that the molded in color kits offer a whole new set of problems when painting. Steve

I agree with you 100% Steve...trying to paint over some of the colors is tough to do and no loose all the detail...been there done that. Now if its a factory color its not so bad depending on what the builder has in mind for the build...by far I find that white plastic is the easiest color to paint over with which ever color one wants to....yep Johan had some oddball colors they were molded in but I still loved them just like there snap or promo like kits....love them.

Thanks Rob for the info, that explains it then why they did it. Did they also do that on the 75 Caprice?

Reason why I'm asking is I have a MPC 75 Caprice and it is molded in dark brown but there are 1 or 2 75 Caprice's on e-bay right now that

are molded in white. All of my 76's are white.

I don't know, both my '75s are molded in white. Both my '73s are molded in gold.

Fairly common practice ~ especially in those lean years ~ among the model making companies was to take on general, industrial injection-molding work from outside sources. Between model runs, they might be producing appliance parts or components for various consumer goods.

If an outside job required plastic pellets of a specific color, and the model-maker ended up with a bunch of left-over pellets, it was not uncommon to see them find their way into a kit.

I think that's where some of the crazy swirled multi-color kit bodies came along, too.

I can just see the company awarding an employee some kind of fine-dining night out for coming up with that idea! 'Hey, boss! Here's an idea for getting rid of all those left-over pellets!'

Just checked my stash--

My 1971 is white

My 1972 is blue

My 1973 is gold brown

My 1974 thru 1976 are all white

About the two different colors on the 1971, sometimes manufacturers would do a second release mid-season and add something to spur further sales. For example, Revell did those glitter cars in 1961. Maybe MPC did the red body that way. Was there any mention on the box?

Got my replacement Golf GTi kit today, and yes, it has the Cabrio parts as well, this almost starting to get funny

All of my big '70s Chevys are unfinished. ^_^

No Tom there were no indication on the box. Just call me weird I like my 71,72,73,75 in the molded and prepainted colors as they do kind of offset the

look of them when I put them in the cases.

I have the weird Chevy annuals I guess

Mine are:

71 Impala is red

72 Impala is prepaint blue (beautiful color) IMO

73 Caprice is prepaint gold (another beautiful color) IMO

74 Caprice is white

75 Caprice is dark brown

76 Caprice's is white (includes the round 2's)

Oh well I'm a weirdo anyway for molded in color kits..

So do the golf kits have all the parts to build the sedan version?

I mean are the cabrio parts extras in the kit or are the kits screwed up?

I was gonna get one but I don't want to if the kit parts are mixed up.

They have two parts trees that go with the Cabrio kits.

Got the RoG reissue 993 Porsche 911 cabrio and Bentley Blower. Surprisingly, neither kit had Golf Cabrio parts...

So the two trees are extra parts along with all the sedan parts correct?

No, from what I have been reading here and elsewhere, the parts like wheels and interior parts are being replaced by the incorrect Cabrio parts trees. They are not just free extra parts.

Like Matt said, no they are not extra parts, they are the parts tree belonging to the Cabrio kit
