Aaronw Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 I've found examples of the Ford C series showing the minor changes between 1957 and the end of production in 1990, but haven't had much luck on the two oddities of the truck. Mack used the same cab built by Budd for the Mack N from 60-64 or so. Mercury of Canada sold the Ford C under the Mercury name until 1968, I beleive they called it the M series. I'm looking for reference photos that will give me a good idea of the different trim used to make the Ford into a Mack or Mercury. From what I've seen it is primarily just the door trim and replacing the Ford with the appropriate company name, but I need to see examples of what the various trim bits looked like. I know the Mack continued to use the quad headlights after Ford went back to single headlights. Any help is appreciated, Thanks

Aaronw Posted September 21, 2007 Author Posted September 21, 2007 (edited) I found a site for Budd, had a very interesting company history but unfortunately only a little on the Ford cab and no photos. I got lucky and found a junk yard full of old Ford trucks a couple weeks ago which had a nice selection of years to show the various trim. All I really need are some halfway decent photos of Mack and Mercury trucks showing the badging used. I have a decent idea but would like some photographic evidence to back it up. I've started collecting what info I can on the various kit trucks to see what else can be made from them. So far I've got quite a bit on the Ford C & L series, the L series isn't too bad, quite a few options but not a lot of changes over the years. The C series has a long history with quite a few interesting twists and turns, I only found out about the Canadian Mercurys recently, but since they were only sold in Canada and the last one sold was in 1968 I'm not holding out much hope of finding a 1-1 to examine in the US, at least with the Mack I could always get lucky. I thought someone built a Ford as a Mack and was hoping they might have some info to share, but maybe I was imagining things because I can't seem to find it now. Thanks Edited September 21, 2007 by Aaronw
SICARD Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Hi, I`am from Germany and I have some pics for you. Hope you like it, all of them have the BUDD-Cab. Sicard
Aaronw Posted January 2, 2008 Author Posted January 2, 2008 (edited) Thank you, I didn't see you post these. This is exactly what I was looking for, I now have examples of the 5 variations of Fords over the years, the Mercury, the Mack and even FWD which I didn't know about. So unless someone finds something else unusual I think that covers the options for the Budd cab. Edited January 2, 2008 by Aaronw
Ayatollah Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 There was just a Mercury C Cab n FEE Bay, it either just ended or is still there. I was browsing the other night in my Motel room, can't sleep when I'm not home. I was surprised to actually see one of those. I believe I was looking under old wreckers. Those Merc pics would be right up your alley.
Aaronw Posted January 5, 2008 Author Posted January 5, 2008 All I could find was a 1956 M100 pickup and a 1962 M750 rollback. Not the cabover like I'm looking for but still handy for the badging. Thanks.

lordairgtar Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 There is a few good pictures of a MACK N in the HOW DO I section at http://pete389.proboards54.com/index.cgiHow about actually naming the thread in that section, so I don't have to look through ten pages of threads. Please!

Any help is appreciated, Thanks Aaron, A few years ago I took a series of pictures of one of those FWDs with the Budd cab. I just found the negatives recently, and plan to take them in and get them transferred to digital media. Give me a few days, and I can share those with you if you're interested. Lee

Lee Definately interested, I know a guy who is really into FWD trucks, even has a few. I asked him about the Budd Cab FWD and he didn't know anything about them. He asked a guy he knows who has written books about FWD trucks and he knew very little about them.
Jim B Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Didn't GMC use the Budd cab for their medium duty cab-over?
Aaronw Posted February 16, 2009 Author Posted February 16, 2009 If I am thinking of the same GM cabover it was not a Budd cab, but did have a similar look to the Ford C.

I'd love to see some also. I have one more C 900 kit that I'm thinking of converting to a FWD. What kind of engins did FWD use? I'm picking away on a Mack N conversion.I have some great under hood pics if anyone's interested. Maybe I'll get one more for a FORD H. KEVIN Edited February 27, 2009 by mistermodel
Aaronw Posted November 25, 2009 Author Posted November 25, 2009 I guess its been awhile since I checked this thread. I did get more info on the FWD's using the Budd cab, and found out there was even one more user of the cab, Walter. First the FWD's, they were available with diesel or gas motors, the diesels were the Detroit Diesel 3-71, 4-71, and Cummins JT-6B. The gas motors came from IH and included the BD-264, RD-406, and RD-501. The truck came in a variety of weight classes from 20,000lbs to 36,000lbs GVW. Looking at the photos on the spec sheet vs photos of trucks in use I'm guessing there was quite a bit of customization. The basic truck looks like a lifted Ford with a different taller grill, and partially closed off wheel wells, while most of the photos of trucks I've seen end up with the headlights down by the bumper and either warning lights or blanking plates in place of the headlights. I also ran across some info that Walter used a highly modified version of the cab for some of their crash trucks. It appears FWD used a licensed Ford cab, while Mack and Walter only purchased partial cabs from Budd and completed them with their own components. So that brings the total number who used the Budd built cab up to 5, Ford, Mercury, FWD, Mack, and Walter.
RyanSilva Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Thanks for the update Aaron. Ive been trying to dig up FWD budd truck photos..but turned up empty aside from the same ones on the forums.
cargostar Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 Thibault in Canada used the Budd cab to build their AWIT line of fire trucks.
