clovis Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 What grit should I use for sanding the primer coat? Thank you in advance!!!!!!!!
Guest Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 No coarser that 320. 400 might be fine. It would be OK if one were planning on spraying more primer, but definitely not right before paint. Even then, the primer should be sanded with at least 600. If I'm spraying enamel paint over the primer (very rarely,if ever nowadays), I sand with 600-1000 grit. If I'm spraying lacquer, I sand with at least 1000 grit, usually 2000.
Exotics_Builder Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I use 1000. I agree for final primer coat. Gives some "tooth" for the color coat. I wouldn't go finer than 3200 grit.
clovis Posted April 17, 2013 Author Posted April 17, 2013 Thank you for the replies!!!!! Where can I find these high grit sandpapers? A body and paint shop supply store?
sportandmiah Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Hobby Lobby has the finer grit stuff. And using 400 grit sandpaper is crazy low....I start at nothing less than 1000....unless im trying to take some serious material off.
LoneWolf15 Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Clovis , Check out Micromark.com , they have rubber backed sand paper starting at 2400 and it goes up to 12000 . Sand the body all the way up to 12000 under cold running water . The smoother the surface to be painted , the smoother the paint job !
heroncustom Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Im usually an 800 between primers and a VERY light 2000 before color after that i jump to the 3200-12000 polishing kit for clear and polishing.
