DirtModeler Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Hi all, I'm back in R&D mode at Dirt Modeler, and want to circle back around to 1:16th seats for a moment. I've seen a number of people using my 1:16th seats (which is great), but it looks like some who used them had to trim them down to fit. The seat my design is based on is for a Dirt Late Model, which i think must have a more upright position that puts the seat too tall for drag racing use. The reason i'm asking is because i want to solve another issue that the seat has, which is it was originally designed to be viewed only from above (in a dirt late model cockpit). This leaves the back and side of the seat plain. What i'm looking into doing is to create another fret of parts that go onto the seat, and create the back of the seat, so you get the details on both the front and the back... Basically creating a sandwich with details on both sides. But.. before i do that, i wanted to see if i needed to change the seat to create a greater setback angle so it will fit better in drag racing uses. I welcome all thoughts and comments on the matter. I think the end result will be a pretty wicked looking seat.
ScaleDale Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Here are some pages from the current NHRA rulebook that pertain to rollcages and contain diagrams and measurments. It should help you in your design process. Nice seat, BTW. Dale Pages from 2013_NHRA_rulebook_rev1.pdf
Mooneyzs Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Hey Micheal.... I think this is great to expand for another seat. I know I will be purchasing a few in 1/16th scale when you get it done. I personally don't know what the angle of the seat back needs to be. I wish I had info on seats to let you know.
DirtModeler Posted June 13, 2013 Author Posted June 13, 2013 Thanks guys, i'm pulling together whatever data i can and will start the redesign soon.
hansb57 Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 In real life i'd mount the seat so the driver would sit comforable. I cant remember (in 25 years) that tech ever checked anything on the seat angle. They checked mounting, seat belt slots, padding, foam insert and stuff like that. The first chassis we bought was second hand, the orginal driver was a short guy, my driver was rather tall. Just layed back the seat. This was in Pro Mod, Europe, always 1 season behind NHRA on rules, not funny car. Maybe the above is of any use.
