MikeyB08 Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 So I've been curious about making my own designs for my builds. I like drawing out my ideas so that I can really have the unique build. Now... Here's my question. How would one go about masking off multiple designs (layering)? Would it be smarter to have decals made? I know decals would be a lot easier, but I'm not ready to take the plunge for laser jet printer, ink, decal paper, etc. Any/All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
itsclayyoo Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 i think it would be the same kind of thing as a real car. mask and paint.
cobraman Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 I think that may depend on how radical your paint job is. If you have not done it before I would start out with a simple 2 tone job or maybe just some stripes down the hood and truck and over the roof. Use good tape, good paint ( lacquer ) and have at it. You will need to then clear and possibly wet sand and polish if you want the paint to be smooth wihout a ridge. Someone else will come along to give more and better advise. Good luck and remember to post photos.
MikeyB08 Posted August 9, 2013 Author Posted August 9, 2013 I've done simple lines but feel that I should do more as I'm not overly confident in the area. I will take pictures. Hopefully I can build up on some layers. Thanks for the input guys.
wisdonm Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 (edited) Chris Thobe's thread has just about everything you need... http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=69619#entry861053 Edited August 9, 2013 by wisdonm
DrewCfromSC Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 think backwards. Start with the base or main body color, spray it. Mask your next design over your base, spray it. Repete as many colors as you want to do. Pretty simple to do. Im sure some others have better results, but im a simple builder. Drew
MikeyB08 Posted August 9, 2013 Author Posted August 9, 2013 (edited) Thanks Don! That has helped a lot. Thanks Drew! I had a feeling I was overthinking the process really. I do that far too often Edited August 9, 2013 by MikeyB08
