NALEX129 Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 (edited) This would be the second model I build and decided to put a little of my taste into it. The body would be kinda like apple green (satin); with every thing that is chrome painted white; I guess I used too much power when sanding the front bumper and I broke it, I manage to glue it back together and sand it again and it doesn't look too bad; Ready for primer tomorrow morning and work on the suspension to lower it. Skydime Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 (edited) I always love these trucks. One thing I might suggest. When stripping chrome, don't sand down the parts. Just throw them in some windex for a bit and the chrome will dissolve right off them. I like to take one of those kids milk or orange juice bottles and fill it a little past the longest chrome part and put a lid on it for about an hour. It works every time and gives you a decent opening to insert parts. Just run some cold water over them with an old toothbrush to get the residue off and you are done. PappyD340 Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Paint just will not adhere to chrome pieces, so you should always strip them if they are going to be painted, I am actually working on a 55 Cameo myself just about ready for some assembly!!
NALEX129 Posted August 21, 2013 Author Posted August 21, 2013 Whatever was chrome now has been primered and also the body and the interior are primered.
NALEX129 Posted August 21, 2013 Author Posted August 21, 2013 Can somebody give me suggestions on the grill? I don't like that it doesn't have any holes and I didn't want to paint them black, and if I cut them I know I will end up throwing the grill in the garbage.
Dragfreak Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Sand the back of the grill down until only the bars are showing.
NALEX129 Posted August 22, 2013 Author Posted August 22, 2013 Sand the back of the grill down until only the bars are showing. Thanks! Never thought of this... It will take a lot of sand paper
Dragfreak Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 No all you need is some pretty rough sandpaper and it will make quick work of that thin grill
Skydime Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 thanks! would the paint crack or something if it goes straight to the chrome? Check out what Larry said. x2 for me.
Jantrix Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Thanks! Never thought of this... It will take a lot of sand paper Nope, Head down to the local beauty supply shop and get some sanding sticks in the nail care area. They come in a variety of grits and some are rough enough to remove a LOT of material in a short amount of time. It will be the best $6 you ever spent in the hobby.
NALEX129 Posted August 22, 2013 Author Posted August 22, 2013 Did it with #80 sand paper and took me a while, thinking about leaving it like this (kinda like camaro look)

Have some fun try other things to personalize it the way you like.

I'm going with the axles on top of the springs.
brett Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Check your windscreen fit before you paint, because they dont generally fit . Add a small strip of styrene around the opening where needed to close the gap
MikeyB08 Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 That grill looks awesome!! Heck that helped me out. Excited to see how this plays out.
Ridge Rider Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 I second what Brett said and on mine the hood seamed to sit a little high and I had to shave some plastic to get a better fitment. It is worth the time to test fit parts and assemblies before paint.
slusher Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 The hood always seems over looked on test fitting. That grill looks great. l have to try that...
NALEX129 Posted August 23, 2013 Author Posted August 23, 2013 Thanks guys! I will definitely do some testing fitment .
NALEX129 Posted August 23, 2013 Author Posted August 23, 2013 (edited) Radiator and bed are painted and some testing... Edited August 23, 2013 by NALEX129
NALEX129 Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 I did some assemble on the bed today, the last day of summer vacation!!
Dragfreak Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 Headlights and grill installed. photo 1.JPG photo 2.JPG I think it looks great but I think finishing sanding the back of the grill it would look just a little better, just my 2 cents keep it up!
