Harry P. Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 Wow... they have just stopped the Bears-Ravens game and ordered all the fans in Soldier Field to leave their seats and get into sheltered areas of the stadium, due to possible tornados on the way. It was on the ground just a few minutes ago just SW of Chicago. This kind of weather is common here in the spring, but very unusual in mid-November. Crazy...
DPink Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 I live an hour N. East of St.Louis, so I got to sit thru it. I still wouldn't live anywhere else than the Midwest.
Joe Handley Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 You're not kidding Harry, the way the winds were blowing here in West Chicago, I was half expecting a twister to drop in the middle school field.
Joe Handley Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 Looks like some sun is poking up to the West of home though!
Pete J. Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 I was following the storm system on the aviation weather site and it is one serious fall storm moving across the Midwest. Duck Harry, Duck!
Harry P. Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 And as usual for our crazy weather her... the sun is now shining brightly.
Joe Handley Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 That it is Harry, looks like the rest of the day should be pretty nice.
Tom Geiger Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 I used to fly to Evansville, Indiana via Chicago where I'd get in a small plane to Evansville. Can't tell you how many times I got stuck in Chicago due to weather conditions grounding the puddle jumpers!
Dr. Cranky Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 Just be safe, Harry. Too bad you don't have a bunker.
Harry P. Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 Tornadoes hit at least two towns about 30 miles SW of Chicago (Washington, Coal City)... extensive damage, and the storm was moving in a straight line directly towards downtown (that's why they ordered Soldier Field to be emptied), but it weakened as it hit Chicago. No tornadoes in the city, just a lot of wind and a LOT of rain. This sort of thing isn't supposed to happen in November!
Craig Irwin Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 A LARGE tree is down accross the road 1/4 mile from here, everyone on the other side is without power.
Joe Handley Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 It is pretty wild here, I just made a quick run to Winfield and the winds were pretty strong.
dwayne4385 Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 (edited) It's moving to us now. We have a tornado watch until 8 Tonight. It's 530 right now and pitch black out Edited November 17, 2013 by dwayne4385
Paul Bunyan Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 "The legend lives on from the chippewa on down of the big lake they call "Gitche Gumee". The Lake, it is said, never gives up her dead when the skies of November turn gloomy" Gordon Lightfoot
highway Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 "The legend lives on from the chippewa on down of the big lake they call "Gitche Gumee". The Lake, it is said, never gives up her dead when the skies of November turn gloomy" Gordon Lightfoot Yes, but if you listen to the entire song, it is also referencing a severe WINTER storm, not tornadoes and warm weather.
Harry P. Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 So Harry. When are you going to move? Every time we get weather like this, I ask myself the same question: What am I doing living here???
Harry P. Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 The Bears-Ravens game started at noon. Then the weather delay and the tornado scare. The game just ended at 5:30 local time.
cobraman Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Harry, no storms like that here in Arizona. If you don't mind roasting in the summer and a little dust storm once in awhile you might like it here. The monsoons are over rated. Back to Illinois, I still have a sister back there who lives in a little town called Justice. Lots of wind and rain but no tornados. Plus she lives in a mobile home park and we all know how much tonados love mobile homes. Good luck Patty !!! : )
Harry P. Posted November 18, 2013 Author Posted November 18, 2013 I've been to AZ several times. I'll take hot and dry (AZ) over hot and humid (IL) any day! One of the things I remember, weatherwise, was one evening while I was staying at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, probably around 10 PM or so... it was hot, dry, and not a cloud in the sky that I could see... but in the distance you could see lightning going off constantly. No thunder, no rain, no wind... just lightning. Weird. I had never seen lightning without thunder or rain before!
cobraman Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Oh ya, we have some doozy of lightning storms ( as I call them ). This time of year the weather is beautiful. 72 today I think in the west valley.

I like this time of the year...the Biltmore is in my 'hood, about a mile from my house...some nice restaurants there...nice green part of the city w/ lots of vegetation, not so deserty looking. Winters here are great..it's the temps from May-Oct that I hate...and the dust. Edited November 18, 2013 by Rob Hall
